Hit hard again, Kikuchi seeking answers

Lefty chased in 4th inning in second straight start

  @gregjohnsmlb

SEATTLE -- Yusei Kikuchi is looking for answers. And judging by the crowd of about 25 Japanese journalists who surrounded him after the Mariners’ 9-3 loss to the Angels on Thursday, he’s not the only one.

The normal group of Japanese reporters covering Kikuchi swelled in anticipation of a first-time Major League matchup against countrymate Shohei Ohtani, but that storyline fell through when Angels manager Brad Ausmus didn’t start Ohtani in the series opener.

Kikuchi said that he wasn’t disappointed about not facing Ohtani, but he had plenty of other concerns following a rough start when he lacked his normal command and wound up allowing 10 hits and a season-high six earned runs in 3 1/3 innings in a 73-pitch struggle.

“I didn’t really have my good stuff today,” Kikuchi said through translator Jason Novak. “Throughout the course of a season, you’re going to have a handful of times where you’re feeling really good and then other times you might not have your best stuff. I have to learn to grind through the games when I’m not having my best stuff. I’m still working through the adjustments.”

 Beckham's 2-Run Homer

Tim Beckham hits home runs in back-to-back games and puts the Mariners on the board for the first time in the 5th with a two-run homer

 Long's tremendous dive and flip

Shed Long takes away a base hit up the middle with a diving stop and completes the glove flip for the out at second base

It seems like it might be a good time for another of the abbreviated Kikuchi starts for the Mariners, given that their 27-year-old rookie was hit hard for a second straight outing. Manager Scott Servais wasn’t ready to commit to that, but the initial plan of a shorter start about once a month indicates that decision is looming.

“We’ll continue to talk about it,” Servais said. “Those starts are mapped out ahead of time. But we’ll talk about it and sit down with him. I’m more concerned about where he’s at and making sure he learns from this type of stuff. On the nights you don’t have your ‘A’ game, you have to figure out a way. That’s what really separates the pitchers in this league. He’ll learn from it.”

Kikuchi said that he feels fine physically, but he will leave it to the Mariners to determine his schedule.

“That’s not my decision,” he said. “I’m going to listen to what the coaches say to that. No matter what, I have to get ready for my next start. There’s going to be highs and lows throughout the season. I just want to be ready and make sure I have my best stuff the next time out there.”

 Beckham's slick diving stop

Tim Beckham dives to his left to snag the ball, then makes the throw to first base from his knees for the first out in the 9th inning

Kikuchi had several outstanding starts in early May after a one-inning outing on April 26 against the Rangers to limit his workload in his initial season in the Majors. But he’s given up 20 hits and 11 runs (10 earned) in 6 2/3 frames over his past two starts against the A’s and Angels.

Kikuchi is now 3-3 with a 4.43 ERA, with his next appearance slated for Tuesday against the Astros at T-Mobile Park.

Kikuchi’s velocity was down a little as his fastball was sitting around 92 mph most of Thursday, and he didn’t notch any strikeouts.

“He’s been pretty good at putting guys away, but they did not swing and miss tonight,” Servais said. “He didn’t have much to miss the barrel at all and left a lot of pitches in the middle of the zone. They took advantage of it.”

But Kikuchi vowed he’d learn from the experience as he continues working through his first season in MLB.

“In nine years as a pro in Japan, that’s one thing I learned was how to manage ballgames even when I don’t have my best stuff,” he said. “I have to look back and see what I need to do. There’s not one thing to pinpoint, like I need to change this. I just have to grind through my starts when I don’t have my best stuff.”

Kikuchi is far from the only Mariner struggling of late. Seattle fell to 1-9 over its past 10 games and 11-33 since its surprising, MLB-best 13-2 start.

Tim Beckham provided some pushback for the Mariners with a two-run homer in the fifth inning -- his 11th of the season and second in the past two games -- and wound up with three RBIs on the night. But Beckham, back at shortstop in place of the injured J.P. Crawford, also committed his Major League-leading 13th error of the season.

That miscue hiked Seattle’s team totals to 64 errors and 55 unearned runs -- both Major League highs -- in 59 games.

'I'm just praying' Albert Almora Jr, father of 2, opens up about horror of girl being hit by foul ball

HOUSTON -- Chicago Cubs outfielder Albert Almora Jr. says he immediately locked eyes with the girl hit by a foul ball off his bat during the fourth inning of the game against the Houston Astros Wednesday night.

Almora hit a line drive into the field-level stands down the third base line, where the girl sat. His reaction was instant.

Almora put his hands on his head, eventually falling to his knees near home plate. He was consoled by teammate Jason Hayward and manager Joe Maddon.

LOOK: Former Seahawk Earl Thomas wearing No. 29 for Ravens

Attention Seahawks fans who are still dismayed about safety Earl Thomas no longer being in Seattle . . .  you might want to stop reading now.

With last offseason and the subsequent 2018 campaign revolving around Thomas’ holdout, debating whether or not to trade him, and his devastating injury in Week 4, the former All-Pro safety’s exit from Seattle was less than amicable.

Since then, Thomas made his way east to Baltimore, where he signed a four-year deal worth $55 million to become the third highest paid safety in the league. Now Ravens fans, Seahawks fans, and the rest of the NFL are getting a first look at Thomas in a Baltimore uniform.

Thomas will be playing on a new team, in a new city, in a new division and even a new conference. Despite all the change, it appears one thing will remain the same – he is still going to be wearing jersey No. 29.

After it was announced Thomas would be signing with Baltimore, all eyes turned to cornerback Marlon Humphrey, who currently owned No. 29 during his two years with the Ravens.

Thomas and Humphrey clearly worked a deal out involving charitable donations, and now Thomas can continue wearing the same number he has for his entire NFL career.

Seahawks fans will get an even closer look at Earl Thomas in a Ravens uniform when Baltimore makes a rare trip to Seattle in Week 7.

Child hit by Albert Almora foul ball reportedly expected to be OK

A young child who was hit by an Albert Almora foul ball during Wednesday’s Houston Astros-Chicago Cubs game is reportedly expected to be OK.

Almora was batting in the top of the fourth inning at Minute Maid Park and pulled a foul ball that hit a young fan. Almora saw what happened and immediately was shaken. The young child was rushed up the aisle for examination and was taken away in an ambulance.

SportsTalk 790 in Houston later reported that the child was taken to a local hospital for precautionary reasons and was expected to be OK.

The news will come as a huge relief to Almora and anyone watching. Almora struck out in his at-bat and was emotional after receiving an update from a security guard, even crying on her shoulder.

The incident will likely reignite the conversation over protective netting at games. MLB has encouraged protection and may consider further measures, which is something many players have called for.

The U.S. Has Had 500 Tornadoes in 30 Days

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. has been rocked by 500 tornadoes in the past 30 days with a trapped jet stream in the atmosphere “stuck in neutral,” according to the U.S. Storm Prediction Center.

In the past seven decades, only 2003, 2004, 2008 and 2011 have faced that many tornado reports in a 30-day period, Bill Bunting, chief of forecast operations at the center in Norman, Oklahoma, said in a telephone interview. Through Tuesday, the center got calls on 12 days of eight or more tornadoes, a preliminary record that will take months to confirm.

“Whether or not we can say it was unprecedented, we will figure out later, but it certainly has been unusual,” Bunting said. “It is unusual to have this kind of streak going.”

The tornadoes have been driven by larger weather patterns that have also led to widespread rains and flooding across the Great Plains and Midwest. A low-pressure area is stuck over the Pacific Northwest, while high pressure sits on top of the southern states, allowing a stream of powerful winds to slice through the center, drawing energy from the Gulf of Mexico.

Smith swipes second after review

Mallex Smith steals second base, and after the Rangers challenge the call on the field stands in the 3rd inning

  @gregjohnsmlb

SEATTLE -- It was good to get home on Monday for the Mariners. Just ask Mallex Smith.

The Mariners center fielder stole home in the eighth inning of Monday’s 6-2 win over the Rangers, capping a “stolen base cycle” and a club-record-tying four-steal night as Seattle snapped a six-game losing streak.

After an 0-6 road trip, all the Mariners were plenty happy to be back at T-Mobile Park on a sunny Memorial Day evening, and none more than Smith, who swiped second, third and then home when reliever Kyle Bird threw to first on a pickoff attempt following his one-out walk.

Smith snapped out of his lengthy struggles at the plate with a 2-for-3 night that included the go-ahead RBI single in the fourth. Smith also singled, stole second and scored in the third and is now hitting .176 with 12 stolen bases.

Smith, one of Seattle’s major acquisitions in general manager Jerry Dipoto’s offseason youth movement, was demoted to Triple-A for two weeks at the start of May and was just 4-for-25 since his return. But after two games off to work on some swing changes, the 26-year-old reached base three times and made the most of those opportunities with his first steals since April 23.

“I’ve been doing nothing since I’ve been up here and I know that,” Smith said. “But at the same time, I also know the player that I am. I just knew if I kept a positive attitude, upped my focus and continued to stay aggressive that it would come around. I’m anticipating it’ll continue to develop and I can help the guys get more wins around here.”

Smith's RBI single

Mallex Smith rips an RBI single to right field to drive in Shed Long, extending the Mariners' lead to 3-1 in the 4th inning

Smith’s four stolen bases were a career best, and he became the first Mariner to steal home since Dustin Ackley in 2012. Smith said it was the second time in his career he’s stolen home in about seven attempts.

“It was great to see Mallex get going,” said manager Scott Servais. “I’ve never seen anybody steal three bases in one inning.”

Three other things to like from Monday’s game:

❗❗ VOGEY ❗❗

Vogelbach's Home Run Stands

Daniel Vogelbach belts a two-run home run into the upper deck after the call on the field stands in the 8th inning

Vogelbach's Towering 2-Run Homer

Daniel Vogelbach clobbers a two-run homer into the upper deck, his 15th of the year, extending the Mariners' lead to 5-2 in the 7th inning

 1. A Vogel-bomb into rare territory

Daniel Vogelbach’s 15th home run of the season, a towering two-run shot into the third deck down the right-field line off reliever Jose LeClerc in the seventh, clinched the much-needed win for a club that had lost nine of its last 10 games and gone 10-30 since its 13-2 start to the season.

Vogelbach is believed to be just the third player to reach the upper deck in right field since the stadium opened in 1999, joining Mo Vaughn of the Angels (‘99) and Carlos Delgado of the Blue Jays (‘01).

“For the ball to go over the foul pole like that, that’s some kind of special power,” Servais said. “Pretty cool.”

Vogelbach also hit a ball into the upper deck in batting practice prior to Monday’s game.

“I thought it was going to stay fair. It was just high,” Vogelbach said. “I’m thankful after replay it stayed and it was two runs for us.”

Spitting that knowledge Seager Vogelbach @Mariners

Simply Seager

Seager's 1st RBI of 2019

Kyle Seager drives in Mallex Smith with a single into left field to collect his first RBI of the season, opening the scoring in the 3rd

 2. Milone makes most of his opportunity

Tommy Milone pitched extremely well in his second outing for the Mariners -- and his second time facing the Rangers -- as he allowed just four hits and two runs over 5 2/3 innings, with one walk and seven strikeouts in 80 pitches.

The 32-year-old evened his record at 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA since being called up from Triple-A Tacoma to replace rookie Erik Swanson in the rotation.

“Every time I can take the ball every fifth or sixth day and go out and compete and be myself, hopefully I can keep it going and keep on a roll,” said Milone, who had some strong seasons for the A’s and Twins from 2012-15 but has bounced between five teams since ‘16.

“Tommy Milone did his job and got us into the sixth inning,” Servais said. “His changeup was really good early on. He got a lot of swings and misses with it. He located the fastball. He’s got a lot of experience. Nothing really gets to him. He just goes out and pitches, and he made pitches tonight.”

 Santana's run-scoring single

Domingo Santana grounds an RBI single to left field to score Kyle Seager, extending the Mariners' lead to 2-0 in the 3rd inning

3. The anonymous bullpen steps up

The Mariners’ relief crew has been a revolving door, but they’ve come up with some interesting power arms of late that could help alleviate one of the team’s biggest sore spots.

Cory Gearrin replaced Milone in the sixth and struck out Logan Forsythe to end that frame. Then newcomers Jesse Biddle, Austin Adams and Anthony Bass shut out the Rangers on two hits over the final three frames.

“We have a couple new additions, and I really like what we’ve seen so far,” Servais said. “We’ll keep giving them opportunities. They threw the ball really well tonight.”

That's how you start the home stand! @Mariners win 6-2! Win #24 on the year
