Seahawks Super Bowl Contenders? Why Seattle Should Be Taken 'Seriously'
Unlike last year, theSeattle Seahawkswon't be sneaking up on anyone this upcoming season, as the team is now expected to make the playoffs and contend for a NFC West title.
But a Super Bowl contender? It's perfectly okay if the Seahawksaren't quite there yet after being over a year removed from trading franchise quarterback Russell Wilson.
SI's lesson learned for the Seahawks? That they are "this year’s sleeper Super Bowl contender." Here's why:
"More should be taking the Seahawks seriously after the offseason moves they made, such as drafting Devon Witherspoon and Jaxon Smith-Njigba," SI wrote. "If Geno Smith proves to be more than a one-year wonder, the Seahawks might have one of the best rosters in the NFC. They also have enough playmakers
on offense and defense to keep pace with the mighty 49ers in the NFC West."
It's certainly not a stretch to say the Seahawks have one of the NFC's best rosters, which would put them in the Super Bowl conversation by default. The team retained much of the key talent from last season while continuing to build a young core that is arguably the best in the NFL.
Combine this with a defense that is expected to be much improved and the return of legendary linebacker Bobby Wagner, the Seahawks' roster makeup is the envy of many teams, especially since they essentially skipped the rebuilding faze after being projected as one of the worst squads in the league heading into
last season.
All of this offseason hype is putting the Seahawks on the pedestal of pressure. The talent, youth and veteran leadership is there. Now, it's time for Seattle to make the most of what is fixing to be an exciting season for the franchise.

Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez announced Friday that he will participate in the Home Run Derby next month in Seattle.
Rodriguez is the first official participant in the eight-player field.
He made his intentions known on Twitter by posting, "July 10. See you in Seattle." He accompanied a 45-second video in which he said, "You know what time it is. Let's run it back."
Rodriguez made quite the showing in last year's event at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, belting 81 homers en route to a second-place finish. Then-Washington Nationals star Juan Soto won the event.
Rodriguez, 22, is batting .238 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 71 games this season. He was named the American League Rookie of the Year in 2022 after hitting .284 with 28 homers and 75 RBIs in 132 games.
BALTIMORE -- Had the low-pressure weather system hanging all day over Baltimore interrupted the opener of the Mariners’ three-game series with the Orioles after it began Friday night, there is a chanceLogan Gilbertwould’ve never come back out of the dugout once play resumed. Such is the reality for starting
pitchers and rain delays, with teams often not willing to send their starters back out after long interruptions, due to the risk of injury.
As it was, rain began to fall onto Oriole Park in the 7 o’clock hour Friday, but at that point, the Orioles and Mariners already knew they wouldn't begin play on time. That meant Gilbert’s progress was never impeded by weather, only delayed. And that worked out well for the Mariners, who went on to score double-
digit runs for the second straight night and secure a 13-1 win behind arguably Gilbert’s best outing of the season.
“Playing with the weather, you won’t win that one,” manager Scott Servais said. “You have to go with the information you have, and if Logan starts the game, you go as far as you can with him. If it rains, you shut it down. Normally an hour is the number. You don’t want him sitting for too long."

Taylor knows what's Up!!!
Gilbert wound up sitting for 105 minutes longer than expected, along with everyone else. Then he began dealing.
Said Gilbert: “A few years ago, that probably would have ate me up. But I've gotten a little more relaxed, I guess, and just tried to stay ready. … I tried to take a nap but couldn’t fall asleep, so I just laid on the floor for like an hour.”
Backed by Tom Murphy and Teoscar Hernández homers and later by a seven-run rally against the Orioles ‘pen in the eighth, Gilbert breezed through seven innings of one-run ball, taking a one-hitter into the seventh and retiring 15 straight at one point on a thick, sticky night in the Charm City. Gilbert struck out five
and allowed only three baserunners, with Baltimore’s lone run coming on Anthony Santander’s solo homer in the seventh.
Tom Murphy Crushes a Two-Run Homer to Left Field (3)
“That was really Logan Gilbert at his best,” Servais said.
Gilbert averaged 96.8 mph with his fastball, saw his heater and slider tick up in both velocity and spin rate and threw 68 percent non-fastballs -- an incredibly high number for a pitcher who threw 61.5 percent fastballs as a rookie two years ago. It speaks to the growth Gilbert has undergone particularly with the
development of his secondary pitches, especially the splitter, which he only began throwing this year.
“His split-finger was fantastic tonight, and that’s not a pitch he even thought about a year ago,” Servais said. “He has the whole package. … Logan is constantly focused on getting better."

Said Orioles manager Brandon Hyde: “He was really good. Firm fastball, 97, really good slider, curveball/split to left-handers. We didn’t square many balls up against him.”
Gilbert’s gem continued a strong stretch from the Mariners’ rotation, which has combined to pitch to a 2.25 ERA and 2.85 (57 K, 20 BB) SO/BB rate over its last 10 games. Seattle is 6-4 in those contests.
They are now 7-8 in Gilbert’s starts, a far cry from the outstanding 21-11 mark they posted in the righty’s outings in 2022, when he pitched to a 3.20 ERA in his first full season. But perhaps that is beginning to trend in the right direction. This is Gilbert’s second consecutive positive outing following a season-worst
setback against the Angels, and third start in his last four that he’s allowed two runs or fewer.

Friday’s outing stands as a prime example of the high points Gilbert showed he’s capable of last year. What’s lacked this season is the same consistency, the ability to string productive outings together the way he did in ‘22. The same could be said about the Mariners’ offense, which set a season-high in runs and hits
and won by its largest margin since June 5, 2019.
The win brought the Mariners back to .500, and showcased what they can look like when they put it all together.
“We came in and silenced the crowd,” Servais said. “It was starting pitching and -- I want to say timely, but it was hitting all night, which is great to see.”
They just announced a rain delay here in Baltimore but we’re still ready for baseball
Today in Mariners history:
1993: Jay Buhner becomes the first Mariners player in franchise history to hit for the cycle. His day was bookended by the two most impressive parts of the cycle, in grand fashion: a grand-slam home run in the first inning, and a 14th-inning
triple; he’d later score the winning run for a Mariners walk-off win over Oakland, 8-7.
2008: Félix Hernández hits a grand slam for the first-ever home run by a Mariners pitcher in franchise history and the first grand slam by an AL pitcher in interleague play.
2017: Félix records his 157th career win in a 13-3 victory over the Astros to pass Freddy García for the most wins by a Venezuelan-born pitcher in MLB history.
Julio Rodríguez will take his cuts in this year'sT-Mobile Home Run Derbyin Seattle on July 10, a year after he set a rookie Derby record on his way tohitting 81 homersin the competition.

Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais was less than pleased with his team following another close loss on Wednesday night and didn't mince words postgame.
"You have got to compete every night. You have got to fight from the first inning on. We are better than that," Servais said after Seattle's 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees, according to Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. "We know we are. It's a collective group coming together saying, 'We're going to fight and compete.'
We are not doing that."
It's been a difficult June for the Mariners, who entered this season with expectations of building off last year's return to the postseason. Instead, the team now sits two games below .500 while falling to 4.5 games back of the final AL wild-card spot.
Seattle's bats were largely silent once again on Wednesday, collecting only four hits for the second straight day and the fifth time this month. The team scored its only runs in the eighth and ninth innings.
The meat of the Mariners' order also continued to struggle. Julio Rodriguez, Ty France, Teoscar Hernandez, and Jarred Kelenic combined to go 2-for-13 in the loss to New York. Kelenic remains the team's only hitter with an OPS above .800.
Things won't get any easier for the Mariners after their series at Yankee Stadium ends on Thursday. Thirteen of their final 17 games before the All-Star break will be against teams with winning records, starting with a three-game set at Baltimore this weekend.

Angry manager gets ejected after catcher’s interference call
Wednesday’s matchup between the San Diego Padres and the San Francisco Giants featured a costly catcher’s interference call that ended up resulting in three runs for the offense, and an ejection for an angry manager.
The play occurred in the bottom of the fifth inning with Padres ace Yu Darvish on the mound. Darvish allowed a two-out base hit to right field.
It looked like the Padres would get out of the inning with only one run allowed after star outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. threw out a runner trying to score on the play. The tag was made by Padres catcher Gary Sanchez, which many thought was the end of the inning.
However, the play would be reviewed and ultimately overturned, as it was determined to be catcher’s interference on Sanchez for standing in the baseline.
This led to Padres manager Bob Melvin losing his cool, arguing with home plate umpire Quinn Wolcott and ultimately being ejected for doing so.
Many around the MLB world had plenty to say about both the call and Melvin’s ejection, taking to social media to voice their opinions.

By Mookie Alexander
More often than not, it’s the sports clues that are a problem on the famed trivia game show.
Evidently ‘Beast Mode’ did not prompt any of Wednesday’s Jeopardy! contestants to go into ‘Buzz Mode.’
Legendary Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was one of the clues on the famed game show, under the category “Official Nicknames” for $600. Reigning champion Ben Goldstein had control of the board.
The clue: “Powerhouse Seattle Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch trademarked this as his nickname.”
You know the answer because, well, you’re reading Field Gulls right now. But these trivia-heads were in shambles.
Thanks to Dan Morse for pulling the video down:
“Beast Mode!” said host Mayim Bialik.
“Of course!” said Goldstein.
Ben did get the Daily Double clue for $800 in the same category, although the trio couldn’t figure out the $1,000 clue for which Central Asian country was called “Land of the Great Steppe” by its former President Nursultan Nazarbayev. Beastmodeistan is not a country, in case you’re wondering.
By the way, Ben won this episode and is now a four-day champion. This normally wouldn’t be a super big deal but I know who he is! He’s listed on the show as “Content Marketing Strategist” but like myself, he used to work in the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) industry. He co-founded the now defunct Cage Potato, which
back in the day was a big time MMA outlet and a place I frequented over the years.
My initial tweet is deleted but Ben, if you’re reading this, congrats on your winning streak but you should’ve paid attention to my angry Seahawks tweets a little more!

Jimi Hendrix is an Immortal Time Traveler in Titan Comics' Purple Haze OGN
The late Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducteeJimi Hendrixis ready to be immortalized - literally - in an upcoming sci-fi epic from Titan Comics, titled Purple Haze. Despite a relatively brief career before an untimely death, Jimi Hendrix is considered one of the greatest rock musicians of all time. His music is viewed as
an iconic, timeless staple of the 1970s, and this original graphic novel will add a new piece to the Hendrix cultural myhtos.
Titan Comics reveals that they will be reviving Jimi Hendrix in graphic novel form. Jimi Hendrix: Purple Haze, by Dj Benhameen, Mellow Brown, and Tom Mandrake, reimagines the musician as an immortal time traveler venturing out across the universe through time and space, now with a purposeful mission. Jimi has
to retrieve an all-powerful talisman in hopes of preserving the power of music for an alien race. At the same time, he hopes to liberate them from an intergalactic tyrant determined to enslave all life forms and silence music forever. The 128-page graphic novel is currently slated for a November 7, 2023, release date.
Readers can scroll down to see the graphic novel's official cover art.
Jimi Hendrix is a Time Traveler in Space in New Titan Comics OGN
This wouldn't be the first time that Jimi Hendrix is given the graphic novel treatment. It was just last year in May of 2022 that Ablaze Publishing released Jimi Hendrix: Electric Requiem, by Mattia Colombara and Gianluca Maconi. While not exactly the fantastical expedition into science fiction that Jimi Hendrix: Purple
Haze is promising to be, Requiem proved to be a sincere portrait of the musician's life from birth to death and his foray into the afterlife.
Having such different graphic novels about Jimi Hendrix in such quick succession of each other is a good sign for fans of the singer. It means that artists and creators are finding new, innovative ways to memorialize the 1970s icon for modern audiences. It's been several decades since Jimi Hendrix's death and just as
long since he first made an impact on the world. With time, it's easy for even the best musicians to fade into obscurity, forgotten and unknown by a younger generation, but this is not Jimi Hendrix's case.
Constantly retelling and reinvigorating pioneers of yesteryear through storytelling is how icons like Hendrix become true legends to begin with. The power that music holds on people is both universal and timeless. Now, readers will witness that power come to life in graphic novel form as Jimi Hendrixattempts to
use time travel to teach that lesson to a civilization of aliens. Titan Comics will releaseJimi Hendrix:Purple Hazebeginning on November 7.

By Daniel Kramer @DKramer
NEW YORK -- The Mariners arrived at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday presumably with the upper hand. They had their ace on the mound, were facing an unproven rookie on the other side and didn’t have the daunting task of pitching to Aaron Judge.
For a team that has hovered around .500 for most of the year, it looked like a realistic opportunity to climb back even after a tough loss on Tuesday to begin a road trip that’s quietly critical despite it being only late June.
Instead, Seattle (35-37) tumbled even farther after a 4-2 defeat that secured a series loss and was another of the more sour variety.
“When you're not going out and doing your job, it's pretty frustrating, especially against teams that you should be competing against and putting up better efforts against,” first baseman Ty France said. “Our pitching staff has dominated all year, and it's kind of time for the offense to take a step forward.”
Luis Castillo again labored -- albeit not as significantly as his last time out -- and pitched behind more often than usual, which led to two critical mistake pitches in hitter’s counts that the Yankees smashed for homers. Seattle’s workhorse threw 103 pitches but lasted just five innings thanks to only 66 strikes and four
walks. “La Piedra” also lacked his trademark swing-and-miss stuff, with only three strikeouts and none until his 11th batter.
Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports
It's another center-cut fastball from Luis Castillo to a lefty that turns into a big, pull-side homer -- this one from Billy McKinney. The Mariners now trail, 3-0, here in the 4th inning.
Not what Jarred Kelenic wanted.
That said, Castillo only gave up three runs, which has typically not been enough of a barometer for Yankees’ success. But Seattle’s bullpen surrendered another via a solo homer from Anthony Volpe off Gabe Speier in the seventh.
By that point, on a night when the Mariners’ bats manufactured just two hits (both singles) against Yanks starter Jhony Brito before Dylan Moore ripped a pinch-hit solo homer with two outs in the eighth inning, the game was seemingly out of reach despite Seattle adding another run in the ninth. Brito entered play
with a 5.58 ERA and a .839 opponents’ OPS.
"You have got to fight from the first inning on,” manager Scott Servais said. “We are better than that; we know we are. It's a collective group coming together saying we're going to fight and compete. We are not doing that."
Teoscar Hernández makes a nice running grab,
then nearly runs all the way to first base to double-up Gleyber Torres, who was already well past second base. That'll help Luis Castillo clear the 5th inning with Matt Brash warming.

Have they gotten out of the approach that has recently shown promising signs?
“It's just kind of spotty right now,” France said. “You'll see good at-bats here and there, some hits here and there, but it's just one of those things where we're not doing it all at once. It's kind of hard to win baseball games that way.”
It was on this very day one year ago that the Mariners emphatically turned their season around, one that in so many ways has mirrored this up-and-down 2023 but also feels much different.
Dylan Moore Lines a Solo Homer in the 8th (1)
At 29-39, with just 5.8% FanGraphs odds to reach the postseason, and with things looking as bleak as could be, the Mariners began a stretch on June 21, 2022, in which they went 22-3 and thrust themselves back into the second AL Wild Card spot.
That one-month run also featured a 14-game win streak that was tied for MLB’s longest of the year, and it inspired the front office to splash at the Trade Deadline and acquire Castillo, who helped propel them to the postseason.
One year later, despite a better record, the uphill climb looks steeper -- especially with a far deeper field of playoff-caliber teams in the American League.
Jarred Kelenic Lifts Sac Fly to Left-Center in 9th
This road trip, which began with their two best pitchers, George Kirby and Castillo, seemed like an promising opportunity. The Yankees entered the series with a .192 batting average and .250 on-base percentage in June, by far MLB-worsts in that stretch. And they were just 4-8 since Judge suffered a right great toe
sprain.
“We're on the road; you've got to hit,” Servais said. “And you need to put pressure on their pitching, and we have not done that.”
Instead, Seattle will look to avoid a sweep, then head to Baltimore where the Orioles await, holding the top AL Wild Card spot.
“Every game is important, but when you're playing against teams of this caliber, [given] how close we are to them, we should put a little more emphasis on these,” France said. “Not saying that we need to put more pressure on ourselves, but we need to hold ourselves more accountable and treat these games as if
they're playoff games.”

As captured by British rockers The Wild Things, who are currently supporting Kiss on their End Of The Road farewell tour across Europe and the UK, it looks like The Demon does indeed know how to have a little fun, after he was spotted by his special guests being somewhat silly backstage.
In a new TikTok, the aforementioned support band captured Simmons whizzing around on a yellow cart behind the scenes in his full stage costume, looking like some kind of ridiculous heavy metal character from Mario Kart.
In another video, the bassist again enters the backstage space on his cart, while then waving at everyone like the late Queen. Honestly, what a goofball.
Captioning the video, The Wild Things write: "Things we didn't expect to see backstage whilst on tour with Kiss".
Underneath, the comments are rather amusing too, with one viewer joking: "Bro looks like Saw on his little trike lmao", as the rockers reply "he's a legend eh".
One viewer offers: "Reminds me of that Austin Powers movie". And another fan confirms our theories in that "Gene knows how to have a good time".
Kiss will continue their farewell tour with a show in Dresden, Germany on June 21, before moving onto by Berlin, Cartagena, Lyon and more. Later this year, the glam rockers will return across the pond for the US leg of their lengthy trek, kicking off with a show in Crandon on September 1.
Check out the TikToks below:
"It's just time," he explained. "And in the same way, it's time consuming. And physically, it's grueling to do what we do. Hell, if I could go out on stage in my jeans and a t-shirt, give us another 10, 15 years easily. But what we do is a whole different sport. I mean, we're athletes; we're running around on stage with
30, 40, pounds of gear, and it's not possible to do it that much longer. So we're not like other bands.
"So, will we do more shows or one-offs? I really have no idea," Paul admitted. "But this is a real clear mindset that the touring days and doing those kind of shows, that's over."

Mike Yastrzemski’s epic splash walk-off, Giants win streak send fans into absolute frenzy
Story by Peter Alexis
The San Francisco Giants extended their improbable win streak to eight games on Monday night, after an epic splash walk-off homer by Mike Yastrzemski.
The veteran blasted his second home run of the game, a three-run shot in the 10th inning to defeat the San Diego Padres by a score of 7-4.
The Giants’ twitter account was so pumped, they dubbed it the “Mike Yastrzemski game” because of all of his contributions.
One Bay Area reporter summed up everything that Yastrzemski did on Monday night, calling him “100% DAWG” after his multi-HR performance. He noted the crucial tag up from third base in the ninth to tie the game and force extras, before winning it himself.
Another fan went deep into the record books to point out an incredible stat. Mike Yastrzemski now has two multi-home run games against the San Diego Padres, both of which ended in a walk-off. The first was in July 2020, when the outfielder splashed it into the almost identical spot in right field to give the Giants a
win.
A researcher for CBS Sports pointed out another epic stat that brought the story full circle. Mike is the grandson of Red Sox legend Carl Yastrzemski, and he just tied his four career walk-offs with the splash into McCovey Cove. His Hall of Fame grandfather was almost certainly watching with immense joy to see the
veteran accomplish the feat.
After all of Yastrzemski’s heroic plays on Monday night, the Giants now sit with eight wins in a row as they look to close the gap on the Arizona Diamondbacks. They are now only three games out of first in a loaded NL West division, and this is stacking up to be a wild summer race for the playoffs.

Child at Yankees-Red Sox Game Goes Viral for Throwing Back Foul Ball
Sunday’s Yankees-Red Sox matchup gave MLB fans a viral moment tailor-made for Father’s Day after a priceless exchange between a father and his two young sons in the stands.
Pat Mulligan and his children Jack and Charlie were on-hand at Fenway Park to take in the latest clash between the storied rivals when a gracious fan looked to give them a foul ball.
At first, things seemed to be status quo when it appeared the Mulligan family had procured a nice piece of baseball memorabilia. However, the heartwarming moment quickly took turn after little Charlie made the executive decision to toss the ball back onto the field, sending big brother Jack into despair as Pat
attempted to pull double duty.
The video of Pat, Charlie and Jack’s oh-so-relatable day at the ball park received waves of attention online, which, thankfully, later led to some off-field heroics from Red Sox pitcher Kenley Jansen.
During a follow-up interview with the Mulligans, Jack shared that Jansen gave the family a signed ball and jersey for their troubles. Pat also gave a little backstory for a tuckered-out Charlie, who he said was so excited to get the ball that he just wanted to make a nice throw.
“We’re awfully grateful to everybody for being so nice,” Pat told NESN.
Needless to say, the fantastic Father’s Day memory ignited plenty of conversation and laughter that should keep the Mulligans and many others entertained for days:

You’ve seen it in the majors: Thanks to umpire cam on Sunday Night Baseball, you get to be in the batter’s place and see what it’s like to try to hit absurd pitches from stars like Spencer Strider and rookies like Bobby Miller.
But let’s take a moment and remember that college pitchers throw triple digits too, which we saw from Florida’s Brandon Sproat, who was a New York Mets draft pick in 2022.
He threw 101 MPH in the College World Series and ump cam shows you how hard it is to decide what to do when it’s right on the corner:
Good luck with that.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba keeps it 100 on Seahawks’ ‘right way’ approach to handling injury
Story by Colin Gallant
Jaxon Smith-Njigba was in Seattle this week for the Seahawks’ offseason program, and after being selected by the team with the No. 20 overall pick in the NFL Draft, he was appreciative of the team for slowly ramping him up from injury.
“I think we did it the right way,” Smith-Njigba said on Tuesday, according to The Seattle Times’ Bob Condotta. “I appreciate the training staff and the coaching staff for doing that. It’s been a long time since I’ve really been out there since when I started OTAs, so I feel like we did it the right way, and I appreciate
them just slowly building me up, and I feel like we are all ready to go and checked a lot of boxes.”
The Rockwall, TX native played just three games and 60 snaps in 2022 with the Ohio State Buckeyes due to a hamstring injury, but he’s beginning to find his comfort zone in Seattle in 2023.
“It’s been awesome connecting with the guys, finally being in the building and not dealing with all the draft stuff and just being on my team and just moving forward with those guys and getting to know these guys better,” the 21-year-old said. “I’ve enjoyed it. It’s what I’ve been looking forward to for a long time.”
After OTAs this week, Smith-Njigba plans to go back to Texas, but mentioned that he will be back in Seattle earlier than the July 25 date to report to training camp to continue to get acclimated with the team.
The Seahawks plan to use the young wideout in three-receiver sets along with veterans DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett in 2023. Head coach Pete Carroll has already said that the 6-foot-1, 196-pound player is “just what we’re looking for,” and veteran Lockett also had high praise for the first-rounder.
“I think he’s going to be phenomenal, man,” Lockett said. “It’s always hard just being able to get adjusted when you first come in. But the way he runs routes, the way he’s understanding the way that [receivers coach] Sanjay [Lal] coaches, the sky’s going to be the limit. I think he’s going to be really good at all the
things that the Seahawks want him to be able to do.”
It looks like Jaxon Smith-Njigba is already making a great impression on the Seahawks and with the injury behind him, he figures to make an immediate impact in 2023.
Reds’ rookie Andrew Abbott sets absurd MLB record not seen in 130 years
Story by Wyatt Allsup
Cincinnati Reds rookie Andrew Abbott just accomplished a feat no pitcher since at least 1893 has pulled off, per ESPN. Abbott has thrown five or more scoreless innings in each of his first three starts with the Reds. 1893 was the year the mound was set to its current distance of 60 feet, six inches from home plate.
It’s not every day an MLB record falls, and certainly not a 130-year-old MLB record. That’s a pretty good way to start a career.
The Reds called Abbott up from Triple-A less than two weeks ago. He made his MLB debut on June 5 vs. the Milwaukee Brewers. In his first start, he tossed six shutout innings and struck out six Brewers while allowing just one hit.
Abbott is not the only Reds rookie turning heads. Elly De La Cruz is a generational prospect and is putting baseball on notice at just 21 years old. The switch-hitting slugger made his debut just the day after Abbott’s. In his second game, De La Cruz smashed a Noah Syndergaard fastball 458 feet for his first home run.
Reds top prospect Elly De La Cruz announces MLB arrival by smashing monster HR vs Dodgers
Cincinnati Reds top prospect Elly De La Cruz has indeed arrived in the big leagues. De La Cruz actually made his MLB debut on Tuesday at home against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he definitely turned more heads and got even more attention this Wednesday when he clobbered a Noah Syndergaard pitch in the
first inning for a monster 458-foot two-run home run.
The talent and potential of Elly De La Cruz are tantalizing, and there should be more home runs in the future from the 21-year-old Dominican. In his aforementioned MLB debut, he hit a double for his first hit in the big leagues and also drew two walks across three at-bats in the Reds' 9-8 come-from-behind
victory over the visiting Dodgers.
Los Angeles had its eyes on Elly De La Cruz even before the series started, with manager Dave Roberts speaking highly of the Reds' youngster prior to the series at The Great American Ball Park.
“De La Cruz, we saw him a little bit in Spring Training. Really physical, plays the game with some joy,” Roberts said on Tuesday, per Mark Sheldon.com. “You can just see the actions. It's going to be fun to watch for baseball fans.”
Elly De La Cruz's addition to Cincinnati's MLB roster is already paying off, only showing that the Reds have a gem in the infielder, who could be a superstar in the making.
The Reds are now right at .500 and are just half a game back from the Brewers in the NL Central. After a disastrous 2022 season, they’ve bounced back nicely and are in the running for a playoff spot.
Abbott was originally drafted in 2017 in the 36th round by the New York Yankees, but chose to play college ball at Virginia. After finishing his college career, the Reds selected him in the second round of the 2021 MLB Draft. After some stellar minor-league play, Abbott got the call from the big leagues.
His next two starts were more of the same from his debut, with 5.2 scoreless innings pitched against the St. Louis Cardinals, and six more against the Houston Astros on Friday. Better yet, he recorded wins in each start.
The Reds are rolling in June, winning six straight and eight of their last 10. If they build on this momentum, watch out for them to steal the NL West this year.
Before he got called up, Elly De La Cruz batted .298/.398/.633 with 12 home runs and 36 RBI in 186 plate appearances in the minors for the Triple-A Louisville Bats.
Andrew Abbott is the 1st pitcher since the mound was set to its current distance in 1893 with 5 scoreless innings in each of his first 3 games.
Giants and Dodgers combine for all-time blooper reel play
Friday's game between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers featured a play that youth baseball coaches will be showing their players for years to come. And not for any good reasons.
Story by Michael Dixon
Friday’s game between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers featured a play that youth baseball coaches will be showing their players for years to come. And not for any good reasons.
San Francisco led 7-5 in the bottom of the eleventh inning. With one out and Michael Busch, Mookie Betts came to the plate. He hit what looked like would be a routine pop-up, but turned into an extended blooper reel, with the two teams getting caught in a series of botches.
It started when Giants third baseman Casey Schmitt dropped the ball to seemingly give the Dodgers runners at first and second with one out. Only, San Francisco pitcher Jakob Junis picked the ball up and inexplicably threw to first, trying to retire Betts, who was already at the base. Junis’ mistake was compounded
by the fact that his throw was wildly offline and went down the right field line.
That should have created nothing worse than runners at second and third for the Dodgers with one out. But Los Angeles was also in a giving mood. Busch rounded third but quickly decided against it. By then, Betts was well around second base. So, the Giants threw into the infield, initially trying to retire Betts.
Seeing this, Busch broke for the plate. At that point, San Francisco second baseman Thairo Estrada threw to the plate. The madness simmered from there. The Giants tagged Busch out, but he stayed in the rundown for long enough to allow Betts to get to third.
The San Francisco and Los Angeles announcers were all baffled at what they saw.
Fans were similarly perplexed.
If the Major League Baseball season ended after Friday night’s game, both the Giants and Dodgers would be in the postseason. But if this play is your primary experience with both, we wouldn’t blame you for not believing that.

Ayesha Curry’s inappropriate ‘joke’ has Stephen Curry, Warriors fans up in arms
Story by Angelo Guinhawa
Ayesha Curry, the wife of Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, landed in hot water recently after social media users didn’t take kindly to her rather inappropriate and insensitive joke about cheating.
During an appearance on “Girl Chat,” Ayesha seemingly made a joke about infidelity when a shirtless male waiter came out to serve them drinks. The Curry matriarch then joked about taking her wedding ring off, and when she couldn’t, she tried to put it further down so it’s not visible.
Of course she did it all for fun, but plenty of viewers and Stephen Curry fans didn’t like her action that was broadcasted for many to see. While she’s clearly joking, many thought it wasn’t the right time to do so. Not to mention that many found it insensitive that she’s poking fun at something that destroyed plenty of
families.
“Ugh. I liked Ayesha. Even at one point she was a role model. This is disappointing. Marriage vows and fidelity aren’t a joke. Fake taking your ring off or pushing it back on further (can’t tell) is so wild to me. I think she’s a beautiful woman just took it too far with this,” Twitter user @adarathexplorer wrote.
A Twitter account also tried to ask its followers who is worse between the controversial Brittany Mahomes–wife of Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes–and Ayesha. Another commenter that goes by the handle @NoMoreMatrix said, “People may find Mahomes wife annoying but there’s no questions about her
loyalty and devotion to he and their family. Can we absolutely say the same about Ayesha?”
“You can win 5 championships, make hundreds of millions of dollars, toned muscles, president and ex president of the country knows you, all the girls want you around the world, Lebron is jealous of your game but you still can’t satisfy Ayesha curry,” a third critic called @NbaWhiteBoye added.
It remains to be seen if Stephen Curry will react to the video, though it’s unlikely the Warriors star will do. Ayesha Curry has yet to respond to the backlash as well, though she might want for the criticisms to die down for a bit before firing back at the haters.

‘They were gassed’: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar drops truth bomb on LeBron James, Lakers’ failed season
Story by Paolo Songco
Los Angeles Lakers icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has admitted that he does not have a personal relationship with LeBron James. They’ve had multiple encounters through the years, but Kareem revealed that he hasn’t had a conversation with LeBron that lasted more than “two or three minutes.”
Be that as it may, this hasn’t diminished Abdul-Jabbar’s respect for the NBA’s new all-time leading scorer. Kareem also had nothing but praise for LeBron and the Lakers for their impressive effort this past season. From starting their season with just two wins in their first 12 games, James and Co. pulled off a near-
miracle by turning their season around after the NBA trade deadline. The Lakers went all the way to the Western Conference Finals, where they eventually fell to Nikola Jokic and the mighty Denver Nuggets.
According to Kareem, the Lakers simply ran out of gas:
“At the end of the year, after all that, LeBron and most of the guys looked like they’d been through two seasons, you know? But they still gave it an awesome effort,” Abdul-Jabbar said Monday, via Dan Woike of the Los Angeles Times.
“I felt that if they hadn’t started out so bad that they could’ve done a lot better. They seemed like at the end of the season, they were kinda gassed, you know? But they really did a great job of finding a new identity and going out and doing very well. They just missed making it to the Finals. They should be proud of
that. I think it’s a really neat achievement.”
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar then provided his thoughts on LeBron James potentially calling it a career. The four-time NBA champ has yet to officially confirm if he’ll be back with the Lakers next season amid retirement rumors. If James does decide to hang it up, though, Kareem believes that he’s already cemented his
legacy:
“I think it’s up to him,” Kareem said. “Certainly doesn’t have to prove anything. And it’s just what he wants to do at this point.”

Guns N’ Roses rocks sold-out crowd of 60,000 in Tel Aviv
Legendary hard rock band Guns N’ Roses took the stage Monday night in front of a sold-out crowd of 60,000 at Tel Aviv’s Yarkon Park.
It’s been six years since the band’s last performance in Israel and their fourth show in the country over the past 20 years. The group first appeared in Israel in 1993, then 2012 and 2017, followed by Monday’s performance
Police closed several roads in Tel Aviv due to congestion ahead of the concert in Yarkon Park.
The Tel Aviv concert was Guns N’ Roses second show of their We’re F’N’ Back! tour in 2023, following Sunday night’s performance in Abu Dhabi.
The three-hour Tel Aviv performance opened at 7:40 p.m. Monday night, and it was only after the third song (“Chinese Democracy”) that lead singer Axl Rose, 61, chatted a bit with the crowd.
“We wanted to have a little gathering,” said the longtime lead singer, who along with Duff McKagan, 59, bassist, and Slash, 57, legendary British-American lead guitarist, make up the band currently. “We’re happy you stopped by.”
Thank you, Tel Aviv! What an incredible night
With that, Rose swung into the rest of the 26-song setlist which included Guns N’ Roses favorites such as “Welcome to the Jungle,” “Live and Let Die,” “Hard Skool,” “You Could Be Mine,” “Sweet Child O Mine,” “November Rain,” “Knocking on Heaven’s Door,” “Night Train” and “Paradise City.”
The song “Civil War” was dedicated to victims of the war in Ukraine.
Fans on social media commented that the band’s 2023 setlist for the new global tour was the freshest in years.
They also remarked on the band’s outstanding energy, including several guitar solos from Slash and Rose playing the piano for a seven-minute version of 1992 top hit “November Rain.”
The band will head to Europe for 15 gigs and are set to return to North America in August before wrapping things up in October in Vancouver.

The Nuggets completed the sweep of the Lakers with a 113-111 win in Game 4 on Monday night. Denver won another tense game in a tense series by erasing a 15-point halftime deficit with a big third quarter, and then holding on late for the close victory. Nikola Jokic — who else? — was again the star for the
Nuggets, finishing with 30 points, 14 rebounds, and 13 assists. It was Jokic’s eighth triple-double of the playoffs, setting a postseason record once held by Wilt Chamberlain.
Jokic’s shot-making rarely gets mentioned as one of his best skills, but it was on full display in the Game 4 win. Jokic hit a ridiculously tough three-pointer in the late fourth quarter when he splashed a one-foot stepback over Anthony Davis. This is witchcraft.
Here’s another angle of Jokic’s make:
That would be an extremely impressive make from Steph Curry. For a 7-foot, 280-pound juggernaut to make that shot is just incredible.
That wasn’t Jokic’s only amazing shot of the game. This one from the second quarter was almost as good.
Jokic was named Western Conference Finals MVP. He fully feels like the best player in the world right now.
The Nuggets didn’t just beat LeBron James and Anthony Davis — they swept them. Denver is firing on all cylinders, and it all comes back to Jokic being the baddest man to step onto basketball court right now.

MAMI -- — Erik Spoelstra had his team fully expecting that Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals would be extremely difficult, that the Miami Heat were going to have to take the best shot that a desperate bunch of Boston Celtics could muster.
He was wrong.

Jayson Tatum issues strong message to Celtics after brutal Game 3 loss vs. Heat
1 win from the Finals!
It was a Heat romp — and a team that had to pull off a frantic rally just to make the playoffs is now one win from the NBA Finals.
Gabe Vincent scored a career-high 29 points, Duncan Robinson added 22 and the eighth-seeded Heat rolled past the Celtics 128-102 on Sunday night. Miami leads the series 3-0, with a chance to finish off a stunning sweep on Tuesday night at home in Game 4,
“That was a solid, mature, professional approach,” said Spoelstra, now on the brink of a sixth trip to the NBA Finals as Miami's coach. “There's a lot of pent-up stuff here and we're getting closer, but we still have to finish this off.”
Caleb Martin scored 18, Jimmy Butler finished with 16, Bam Adebayo had 13 and Max Strus added 10 for Miami. Every team in NBA history that has won the first three games of a best-of-seven has ultimately prevailed; the Heat are 8-0 in that situation.
“The rim was as big as the ocean for everybody,” Adebayo said, after Miami shot 57%.
Bam Adebayo Soars for Poster Alley-Oop over Grant Williams
Jayson Tatum scored 14 and Jaylen Brown added 12 for the second-seeded Celtics, who won three times on Miami’s floor on the way to winning last season’s East finals — but simply never had a chance in this one and basically emptied the bench for the fourth quarter.
“I just didn’t have them ready to play,” said Boston coach Joe Mazzulla, who has been the subject of tons of criticism in this series — and will surely face more going into Tuesday. “Whatever it was, whether it was the starting lineup or an adjustment, I have to get them in a better place, ready to play. That’s on me.”
Grant Williams and Payton Pritchard each added 12 for Boston.
“To their credit, they’re playing well above their means,” Brown said. “They’re ballin’ right now and I’ve got to give them respect. Gabe Vincent, Martin, Strus, Duncan Robinson, guys that we should be able to keep under control are playing their (butt) off.”
The NBA Finals start June 1, and the way things are going, that might mean the league is about to go a few days without games. The Western Conference finals could end Monday; Denver leads that series against the Los Angeles Lakers 3-0. And now, the East finals could end Tuesday.
“It's the first to four games,” Vincent said. “We're not satisfied with three.”
Jimmy Butler Gets Revenge on Al Horford with Timeout Troll
There’s never been a season where both conference finals ended in sweeps; it happened in 1957 in the division finals immediately preceding the title series, when Boston beat Syracuse 3-0 and St. Louis beat Minneapolis 3-0.
Of all the 3-0 series leads in NBA history, this one might be the most unexpected — a No. 8 seed in the Heat, a team that struggled just to get into the playoffs, a team that was less than 3 minutes away from being eliminated in the play-in tournament, getting past top-seeded Milwaukee in five games, then fifth-
seeded New York in six, and now on the brink of denying the Celtics a second consecutive East crown.
And the Heat let Boston know how much they were enjoying this one.
'We want Haslem!' Chants take over Miami
Mindful that Boston’s Al Horford directed a timeout signal toward the Miami bench during Game 1 when the Celtics were on a second-quarter spurt to build a comfortable lead, Butler did the same to Horford as the Heat were running away in the third quarter of Game 3.
Besides, the Heat rallied to win Game 1 anyway. There was no rally required in Game 3 by the Heat. There was barely one attempted by the Celtics, for that matter.
“I don't even know where to start,” Brown said. “It's an obvious letdown. I feel like we let our fan base, organization down. We let ourselves down. And it was collective. We can point fingers, but in reality, it was just embarrassing.”
Boston got within 61-49 when Marcus Smart had a three-point play on the opening possession of the second half. The rest was all Miami, which immediately answered with a 28-7 run to open a 33-point lead at 89-56, which had the building rolling. The lead was so big, and there was so much time left, that the
sellout crowd of 20,088 actually was subdued a bit by the time it was over.
They might have been yelled-out. Or maybe they were saving it for hockey on Monday night, when the Florida Panthers — another No. 8 seed on a magical playoff run in South Florida — will try to take a 3-0 lead in their East finals series against the Carolina Hurricanes.
“We’ll decompress tomorrow,” Spoelstra said, “but we’ll really get our minds right to finish this thing off.”

TIP-INS
Celtics: Robert Williams made his first shot, meaning he made 12 straight to start the series. He missed his second attempt. … The Heat encourage fans to wear white to playoff games, and Tatum also arrived in an all-white suit.
Heat: Robinson made five 3-pointers and now has 124 in his Heat postseason career, passing LeBron James (123) for the most in Miami history. ... Butler’s steal with 7:17 left in the first quarter was the 2,000th in Heat postseason history. … Vincent's previous career best was 28, set in a Jan. 12 win over Milwaukee.
LOVE HURT
Miami’s Kevin Love checked out 4:47 into the game after what the Heat said was an undisclosed ankle injury. He went to the Heat locker room for evaluation, returned to the bench area later in the first half, but did not return to the game.
QUOTABLE
“The lack of mental toughness. It’s embarrassing … that was an embarrassment for the Celtics.” — TNT’s Charles Barkley at halftime, with Boston trailing 61-46 and after being down by as many as 22 points.

LOS ANGELES -- — Nikola Jokic was far from his usual dominant self while mired in foul trouble, and Jamal Murray cooled off after his scorching first half. The Denver Nuggets' big early lead disappeared entirely in the fourth quarter of Game 3, and the Lakers' home crowd was in a frenzy.
The Nuggets weathered every setback and calmly, methodically took control with a poise worthy of champions.
With one more victory, they'll finally get the chance to play for their first rings.
LeBron, Scott Foster joke about mid-game collision
Murray scored 37 points, Jokic added 24 points and eight assists and the Nuggets rolled to a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference finals with a 119-108 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday night.
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half against his former team for the top-seeded Nuggets, who have never been this close to the NBA Finals in 47 years in the league. Denver is making its fifth straight playoff appearance, and the ultimate stage is now just one win away.
“I learn a lot about this team every time we play,” Caldwell-Pope said. “We have that dog mentality where no matter if we’re up, down, we’re going to continue to fight and play our game, and do it at a high level. We’re going to continue to do that for the rest of these games.”
Denver blew a 14-point lead in Game 3, but made a decisive 13-0 run in the fourth quarter to snap the Lakers' nine-game home winning streak since March 26, including seven straight victories since the regular season ended. The Nuggets excelled down the stretch with Murray and Jokic repeatedly running a two-
man pick-and-roll game suggested by “Coach Jokic,” according to coach Michael Malone.
LeBron DIME to AD
“This group is capable of doing great things, and they believe,” Malone said. “Belief is a very powerful thing.”
No team has rallied from a 3-0 playoff series deficit in NBA history. Game 4 is Monday night in Los Angeles.
“I can’t speak for the guys right now because I don’t know what’s going through all their minds, but I still (believe),” said LeBron James, who had 23 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds. “So it’s time to go right back home and start to refuel and start the treatment process and recovery process and get ready for
Monday. My mindset is always locked in.”

Magic Johnson Apologizes To Denver Nuggets After They Took 3-0 Lead Against Lakers
The Denver Nuggets made another statement on Saturday night, beating the Los Angeles Lakers at home, led by Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets became the first team to beat the Lakers at Crypto.com Arena this playoff, which helped convince those who didn't believe in them that Denver is the real
deal.
One of the people that showed respect to the Nuggets was Lakers legend, Magic Johnson. The legendary point guard took to Twitter to send a series of messages praising the Nuggets and their stars.
"I have to apologize to the Denver Nuggets, they proved that they are a better and more talented team in their victory over the Lakers tonight. They put both teams in the Eastern Conference on notice that they are committed to winning a championship!"
"When you have two superstars like Jokic and Murray play at a high level at the same time like they are unstoppable. If they continue that in the NBA Finals, the Nuggets will be world champions!"
Magic also pointed out that the Nuggets' defense is doing a terrific job containing D'Angelo Russell and Dennis Schroder.
Coach Michael Malone is doing an incredible job with the Nuggets, and his players are hungry to win. They have a solid squad that isn't afraid of going against the Lakers. The role players aren't shy and they are able to make shots when the ball is hot.
Aaron Gorden, Bruce Brown, Michael Porter Jr., Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and more have done a remarkable job during this series, and the Lakers are yet to find a response to them.
The Denver Nuggets Have A Date With History In Game 4
While LeBron James and Darvin Ham remain confident in the Lakers, fans are claiming this series is over. Nobody has overcome an 0-3 deficit in NBA history and the Lakers have a terrible record when trailing a series 0-3.
The Nuggets will have the chance not only to sweep a team for the first time but also to beat the Lakers and make it to the Finals for the first time in franchise history.
Game 4 could be the beginning of something great for the Lakers, but it can, and most likely will be a magical moment for the Nuggets.
Anthony Davis had 28 points and 18 rebounds for the seventh-seeded Lakers, who hadn't lost three straight games since early February. Los Angeles' prolonged, desperate surge ever since the trade deadline has finally run out of steam against the powerhouse Nuggets, who have won five consecutive playoff games.
“They've been at the top of the food chain for a reason, and have a plethora of guys that can hurt you, as was on full display tonight,” Lakers coach Darvin Ham said. “But you know, circumstances are what they are. Difficult, but not impossible.”
James hit three 3-pointers after starting the series 0 for 13 from distance, and Austin Reaves added 23 points and seven rebounds. But Rui Hachimura was the only other Lakers scorer to crack double figures with 13 points, and they couldn't counter the Nuggets' balanced effort down the stretch.
“Our backs have been against the wall (for) probably about the last two months, maybe more than that since the trade deadline," Reaves said. “Swinging, throwing punches to fight to get to this opportunity. ... We can either come out Monday and go home, or we can fight for another day. And with the group of guys
that we’ve got, I know what that answer will be.”
Jokic's streak of four consecutive triple-doubles ended in a fairly quiet game for the two-time MVP, who got his fourth foul in the third quarter. But Murray scored 17 points in a dynamic first quarter following his 23-point fourth quarter two nights ago, and he had 30 points by halftime of Game 3.
Bruce Brown scored 15 points and hit a key 3-pointer down the stretch for the Nuggets before Jokic all but iced it on a 3-pointer with 3:17 to play.
Nuggets take commanding 3-0 lead with another clutch Jamal Murray performance
The Lakers’ passionate fans turned out in force for the 17-time champion franchise’s first conference finals games at home since 2010. Los Angeles tried desperately to get back in the series, with James playing 43 minutes after spraining his left ankle in Game 2 on top of his already sore right foot.
But the Nuggets’ flight to the coast didn’t cool off Murray in the slightest: The Canadian guard poured in 17 points in the first quarter and had 26 midway through the second. Reaves racked up 15 points, three assists and three rebounds in the second quarter alone to keep LA in it.
Hachimura’s 3-pointer early in the fourth gave the Lakers their first lead since the opening minutes, but the Nuggets took charge again in a rally highlighted by Brown’s 3-pointer with 7:02 to play, after which he taunted the Lakers’ bench with Los Angeles’ own “Freeze” 3-point celebration.
D’Angelo Russell had another rough game for the Lakers, scoring three points on 1-of-8 shooting in 20 minutes. The Lakers’ biggest addition in their trade deadline transformation has just 21 points in the series.

Jamal Murray’s 4-word message after Game 3 win vs. Lakers will hype up Nuggets fans
Jamal Murray has only four words to say after the Denver Nuggets took down the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. However, his simple yet powerful statement was more than enough to hype up the fans.
“Five more to go.”
That’s what Murray told ESPN reporter Lisa Salters in his walk-off interview after leading the Nuggets to the 119-108 victory over the Lakers on Saturday. It allowed Denver to take a 3-0 lead in the series, putting them just one win away from reaching the NBA Finals and, as Murray said, just five away from the Larry
O’Brien Trophy.
Of course Nuggets fans loved that mentality from Jamal Murray. After all, it just proves that he and the rest of the team are more focused on their ultimate goal over winning the West Finals.

DENVER -- — After Nikola Jokic's monster game in the opener, his pick-and-roll partner Jamal Murray took the spotlight in the Western Conference finals Thursday night.
Murray scored 23 of his 37 points in the fourth quarter, propelling the Denver Nuggets to a 108-103 come-from-behind win over the Los Angeles Lakers for a 2-0 lead in the series.
“He was special,” Jokic said. “He won us the game basically.”
LeBron is soaked by fan's drink after push by Jokic
Murray missed 12 of his 17 shots through three quarters but found his touch in the fourth, going 6 for 7, including four 3-pointers, and fueling a 15-1 run that gave Denver a 96-84 lead.
“He made shots at the end of the clock,” LeBron James lamented. “We guard for 24 seconds and he made two big-time shots, one over (Anthony Davis) and one over me. He had his 3-point shot going in the fourth. It’s no surprise to me, he’s done it before. Sometimes it’s a never-miss league.”
In all, Denver sank seven 3s in the fourth quarter after hitting seven all night.
“It would have been a lot easier if I had made them in the first half,” said Murray, who is still playing through an earache he hasn’t been able to shake since Round 2.

Jokic added 23 points, 17 rebounds and a dozen assists a day after ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters handed the Nuggets the no-respect card by acknowledging that she'd never seen the two-time MVP play before Game 1, when he had 34 points, 21 boards and 14 assists.
“For those that don't know him, he's got 13 playoff triple-doubles now,” Malone sneered after Game 2. "It's just incredible what he continues to do on a nightly basis on the biggest stage in the world.”
As for Jokic, he brushed off the slights on him and his teammates, saying, “It's nothing new for us.”
Malone was plenty miffed by the Lakers getting all the pub.
Jamal Murray's 23-point 4th quarter leads Nuggets to Game 2 win
"It's Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals!"
“You win Game 1 and all everybody talked about was the Lakers,” Malone said. "Let’s be honest, the national narrative was, ‘Hey, the Lakers are fine. They’re down 1-0, but they figured something out.’ No one talked about how Nikola just had an historic performance. He’s got 13 (playoff) triple-doubles now, third
all-time. What he’s doing is just incredible.
“But their narrative wasn’t about the Nuggets. The narrative wasn’t about Nikola. The narrative was about the Lakers and their adjustments. So you know, you put that in your pipe and you smoke it, you come back and you know what, we’re gonna go up 2-0.”
The Nuggets have never been this close to reaching the NBA Finals in their history. Game 3 is Saturday night at Crypto.com Arena, where James and the Lakers are 8-0 in the playoffs.
Malone said he reminded Murray heading into the fourth quarter not to fret over his shooting woes but to focus on contributing in other ways. He heeded that advice, grabbing three big boards on defense and stealing the ball twice besides hitting 4-of-5 from deep and 7-of-8 from the stripe.
“Three-point line is what killed us in the fourth,” James said.

Malone knew that when Murray finally found the net, many more buckets would follow.
“We all know ... he just has to see one go in,” Malone said, and when that happened, "he kind of looked up to the heavens and that’s all he needs. And after that he’s shooting into a hula hoop.”
Just like in Game 1, the Lakers didn't go down easily. They pulled to three points on Austin Reaves' jumper before Murray sank two free throws with 12 seconds left and Bruce Brown stole the ball from James, then dribbled out the final 8 seconds.
The Nuggets improved to 41-8 at home, best in the NBA, including 8-0 in the playoffs.

Peyton Manning after Lakers-Nuggets Game 2
James and Reaves both scored 22 for Los Angeles. Davis scored 18 after pouring in 40 in the opener and Rui Hachimra scored 21 points off the bench.
For much of the night, it appeared as though the Lakers would wrest home-court advantage from the Nuggets, who are the top seed for the first time in their history. The Lakers won the series openers at Memphis and Golden State to reach the conference championship.
The outstanding defense Hachimura played on Jokic in the fourth quarter of the Lakers' loss in Game 1 led many to believe coach Darvin Ham would start Hachimura to try to stymie the Nuggets' star center from the start. But instead he came off the bench again, scoring 17 first-half points but just four thereafter.
“Proud of our guys,” Ham said. “They bounced back. We addressed a lot of the things that we said we were going to try to do better. Still got to be better in transition D. But overall the energy was there, the effort was there, the urgency was there, we just caught a bad stretch.”
