Lakers fan gets more than just $75,000 after banking insane half-court shot

A Los Angeles Lakers fan won more than just the $75,000 cash prize after he banked the half-court shot during a break in Monday’s game against the Indiana Pacers.

The fan, identified as Jaime Murry, banked the shot from long distance with ease and got the prize in the process. It wasn’t the best moment for him, though, but rather the fact that he got to celebrate the big win alongside the Lakers.

Murry actually had a moment with Anthony Davis, who was clearly happy for the fan as he hugged and congratulated him. The rest of the Lakers bench also came to celebrate, with Dennis Schroder, Thomas Bryant, Matt Ryan dapping up the fan.

It’s definitely quite the heartwarming moment. And to be fair, the shot is worth celebrating. After all, it has been two years since someone made the half-court shot and took home the big shot jackpot in LA. The last time it happened was back in January 2020.

Jordan Poole scored 26 points and converted a key layup with 1:27 left and the undermanned Warriors rallied to beat the Utah Jazz 112-107 on Wednesday night.

Ty Jerome hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 5:18 to play after his own steal, then made a key rebound to help set up Donte DiVincenzo’s 3 the next time down as Golden State got another big performance from the reserves.

“I think the stage we're at as a team right now, coach said after the game that was just straight grit,” Jerome said.

Rookie Patrick Baldwin Jr. contributed 11 points with three 3s in 13 minutes off the bench after practicing earlier in the day with the G League Santa Cruz Warriors then arrived about an hour before tip-off. He ate two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the way.

“I thought Patrick changed the game when he stepped out there and knocked down those 3s,” coach Steve Kerr said.

“It feels different to win this game based on the circumstances. This is a game we wouldn’t have won a few weeks ago," Kerr said. "I think our young guys are really growing.”

Golden State Warriors Pull Away From Hornets Late | Dec. 27, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Jonathan Kuminga is earning more minutes for his defense, and he showed everybody the big strides he has made as a stopper with veteran Andre Iguodala as his guide and mentor.

Klay Thompson scored 29 points and Kuminga delivered on both ends down the stretch, including a gutsy steal that helped the Golden State Warriors hold off the Charlotte Hornets late for a 110-105 win Tuesday night.

Kuminga cherishes getting a chance with the game on the line late, which isn't always the case.

“If Coach trusts you and puts you in there, you've got to go and execute things and make things happen,” said Kuminga, a second-year forward.

In one flashy sequence, Kuminga had a steal on one possession and then a defensive rebound and go-ahead dunk moments later on the other end. He made a short floating jumper from the baseline with 1:22 to go, and then dunked again with 21 seconds left. He finished with 14 points and five rebounds.

“He's playing really well defensively," coach Steve Kerr said. “Just wanted to stay with him because of the impact he was making on the ball and with his energy.”

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Jordan Poole is far from a finished product, and the fourth-year guard showed both signs of brilliance and struggles controlling his emotions on the big Christmas Day basketball stage.

Poole scored 32 points — highlighted by emphatic one-handed slam off a pass from Draymond Green in the third — to outduel Ja Morant before being ejected early in the fourth, and the Warriors beat the Memphis Grizzlies 123-109 on Sunday night in a rematch of the Western Conference semifinals won by Golden State.

NEW YORK -- — Jacque Vaughn wasn't aware his Brooklyn Nets had the best first half in their history.

One of the best in NBA history, actually.

Kevin Durant scored 23 points, all but two in a 91-point first half that was the third-biggest in the league, and the Nets routed the Golden State Warriors 143-113 on Wednesday to send the reigning champions staggering home with their second blowout loss in two nights in New York.

“That’s what happens when you come to work and you’re ready to work from the beginning,” Vaughn said.

With Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and Andrew Wiggins all sidelined, the Warriors finished 1-5 on their trip to the East and will hope to get healthy before they have to get back on the court on Christmas against Memphis.

Curry will remain sidelined by a shoulder injury, but Wiggins could be back, and the Warriors will take all the help they can get after trailing by 44 in this one.

“It’s the Warriors," Durant said. "You always respect them no matter who’s on the floor. They have a championship system and championship players.”

James Wiseman scored a career-high 30 points on 12-for-14 shooting for the Warriors, who lost by 38 points to the Knicks on Tuesday night.

The Nets had to come from 18 and then 19 points down in their last two victories, but this one was over not long after the Warriors' bus finally arrived after some New York holiday traffic.

The Nets made 11 of their first 12 shots and by the time the first quarter was over it was 46-17, a 29-point differential that was the largest in any period in the NBA this season.

Kevin Durant nails the jump shot

Coach Steve Kerr said the Warriors' early turnovers — they finished with 21 that led to 36 points — helped the Nets get going.

His 7.7 rebounds per game is on track to surpass his career high of 7.3 last season. His 2.4 offensive boards per game is just a shade under his career mark. Always at the right place at the right time, Looney makes up for physical and athletic shortcomings with an impeccable sense of timing and positioning:

Looney competes with Green on a nightly basis as the team’s best screen setter, which makes them natural screening partners for Curry, Thompson, and Poole. The synergy Looney has developed with the Warriors’ movement shooters was cultivated upon his own capability as a fundamental screener.

but also allows him to act as a handoff hub on several of the Warriors’ freelance sets they’re so fond of running:

Looney has even shown flashes of something that Green has been unquestionably elite at: short-roll passing.

Looney is averaging career marks in assists per game (2.9) and assist rate (15.8%), a testament to the evolution of his role within the Warriors. He’s far from being the young injury-riddled version of himself that wasn’t tasked with a heavy burden of decision making and processing; nowadays, he’s become an

indispensable hub and connector.

the Warriors’ half-court offense (85.1 offensive rating) struggled mightily, even more so without their best player. With Curry on the floor, possessions like this were common:

Warriors run one of their half-court staples – “HORNS Flex”. “HORNS” simply refers to the formation: two bigs at the elbows, two shooters on each corner. Curry feeds Looney then cuts inside to set the “flex” screen for Jordan Poole.

INDIANAPOLIS -- — Tyrese Haliburton scored 29 points and the Indiana Pacers made 16 3-pointers to hold on for a 125-119 victory Wednesday night over the Golden State Warriors and Stephen Curry, who didn't finish the game because of a left shoulder injury.

Curry scored 27 of his 38 points in the first half for the defending champions but departed with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter. The Warriors, who lost at Milwaukee on Tuesday night, fell to 2-12 on the road.

“He's going to get an MRI tomorrow,” coach Steve Kerr said of Curry. “The trainers told me he was out midway through the fourth quarter. I only spoke to him briefly after the game, so I haven't had a chance to talk with him yet.”

Even with the Warriors' biggest scoring threat sidelined, the Pacers struggled to put the game away.

For much of this game, Curry was the only thing keeping the Warriors afloat.

He had 15 points in the first quarter — more than he had in the entire game when the Dubs played the Pacers last week. He had 27 points at halftime — as many as all of his teammates combined.

He looked destined for a 50-point triple-double while putting the team on his shoulders and leading them to a win when no one else looked up for the challenge.

And then he became the story for an entirely different reason.

Beast Mode

Bennedict Mathurin added 24 points for Indiana, which snapped a two-game skid by sweeping the Warriors for the first time since 2017-18 and just the second time in a decade. Haliburton rebounded from his lowest-scoring game with the Pacers — one point — by going 9 of 17 from the field and making five 3s.

Bennedict Mathurin gets the and-1 to fall

Jordan Poole scored 20 points for Golden State, which has lost four of five. The Warriors played without Klay Thompson (right knee) and Andrew Wiggins (abdominal muscle). Draymond Green scored a season-low one point in 27 minutes and was ejected in the fourth quarter.

Indiana looked like it would cruise after rallying from an early 20-11 deficit and using nine 3-pointers to spur a 47-point second-quarter barrage. The Pacers led 74-54 at halftime.

But after Indiana opened the third with yet another 3Curry methodically led the Warriors back.

Draymond ejected after arguing with the refs

It started with a 14-0 run and Curry's three-point play with 4:16 left in the third made it 83-80. The Pacers answered with 10 straight points, but the Warriors refused to let them pull away and cut the deficit to 122-119 when Donte DiVincenzo made a 3 with 1:25 to go. Golden State never got any closer.

“We had some good answers when we absolutely needed to have them,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “We weren’t perfect, but we’ve just got to keep learning the things we need to learn and keep getting better.”

By

The Milwaukee Bucks are the best defensive unit in the NBA for plenty of reasons.

They have the perfect combination of personnel to make it tough for all sorts of opponents. Defense starts at the point of attack, and the Bucks have plenty of point-of-attack hounds that can put an enormous amount of ball pressure to bother ball handlers, navigate screens to stay attached around picks, and the

ability to lock and trail to close airspace quickly.

Having the kind of on-ball personnel they have — Jrue Holiday, arguably the premier point-of-attack defender in the NBA, and others such as Jevon Carter, George Hill, and Wes Matthews — has empowered the Bucks to deploy the deep drop as their base pick-and-roll coverage. Drop works only when you have the

perfect combination of good on-ball defense and a drop big who knows how to navigate the middle ground between a ball handler and the roll man.

The Bucks happen to have the best drop-back big in Brook Lopez — the early favorite for Defensive Player of the Year. Lopez leads the league in blocks per game (2.9). Only Myles Turner (8.5) defends more shots at the rim than Lopez (7.7.), but Lopez has a commanding edge in opponent rim percentage (51.8%)

over Turner (58.1%).

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green got a Milwaukee Bucks fan ejected on Tuesday following what seemed to be a heated exchange between him and the said fan.

Green was seen on camera talking to the referees about the said fan before officials contacted security to get the man out of his seat and the arena.

Add to the equation arguably one of the best help defenders in NBA history — if not the best (Draymond Green certainly has something to say about that) in Giannis Antetokounmpo — and the Golden State Warriors certainly had a mountain to climb going into their marquee matchup in Milwaukee.

A mountain that proved too high and insurmountable for them to overcome.

To illustrate how much trouble the Warriors had in terms of trying to get efficient looks at the rim — they shot 12-of-22 at the rim, good for 54.5% and slotting them within the 11th percentile — here’s a possession during the early stages of the third quarter that perfectly captures their struggles:

NBA: Golden State Warriors at Milwaukee Bucks

Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

First thing that must be pointed out was the incredible amount of ball pressure Carter applied on Steph Curry. Without Holiday, the Bucks defended Curry by committee — Matthews spent time defending Curry, with Carter exchanging duties. Both of them did a commendable job.

But the rest of the possession is the meat and potatoes of what makes the Bucks so tough to score against. The Warriors flow into handoff action between Green and Klay Thompson, with Antetokounmpo going up to the level of the screen against Thompson, who counters with a pocket pass to Green.

This is where Lopez’s ingenuity as a rim protector comes into play.

Lopez plays both the potential dump-off to Kevon Looney, while also keeping tabs on Green. He waits to make sure Green commits to the layup before going up and blocking the shot. Such sublime decision-making, real-time processing, and uncanny timing is what has made Lopez into the league’s premier rim protector.

Take note also of Carter and Grayson Allen staying home on Curry and Jordan Poole, respectively. This further limits Green’s options on the short roll, leaving him no choice but to go up for the layup himself. This is illustrative of the Bucks and their efforts to limit opponents’ looks from outside as much as possible —

they allow the fifth-lowest opponent three-point rate in the league, a far cry from their previous four seasons where they ranked no higher than 26th.

Combined with the Bucks allowing the fourth-lowest opponent rim rate in the league, their defensive shot profile has been among the best in the league. Their defensive location eFG% — a measure of how well a team limits opponents from getting the most efficient looks (i.e., layups and threes) on the floor — of

53.4% is fourth best, per Cleaning the Glass.

They allow the third-highest amount of mid-range looks from opponents, which states their preference for giving up the mid-range in an effort to limit rim attempts and three-point shots. Nothing was perhaps more illustrative of this philosophy than on this possession against the Warriors:

Giannis goes coast-to-coast for a Bucks slam

12/13/22

Giannis Antetokounmpo explodes, Bucks dominate Stephen Curry & Warriors | Hoops Tonight

Again, Carter’s ball pressure on Curry must be commended. Looney “zipper” cuts and receives the ball up top in a 5-out “Delay” configuration (a big handling the ball up top to initiate action). Looney flows into “Chicago” action (a pindown flowing into a DHO), with Poole receiving the handoff.

Having Green in the corner seems counterintuitive — he’s not a threat as a shooter — but with Curry on the wing next to him, this is a tell that Green is about to initiate “blind pig” handoff action with Curry running to the corner and hopefully getting an open look because of Green’s defender sagging off.

However, Green’s defender happens to Antetokounmpo, who quickly diagnoses the action and uses his length and long stride to close the space quickly. Curry is discouraged from shooting and is forced to kick out to Thompson on the weak side. Khris Middleton’s hard close-out runs him off the line, and Thompson is

forced into a tough floater against Lopez that misses — a shot the Bucks more than preferred even if the floater did go in.

The Bucks’ combination of size, length, and physicality gave the Warriors plenty of trouble on defense, but it also played a part during certain half-court offensive possessions from the Bucks. They’re far from the best half-court offense in the league (94.7 half-court offensive rating, 19th). It showed as much against

the Warriors, where they won not because of their half-court offense (92.3 offensive rating, 42nd percentile), but because of their dominance in transition (180.0 offensive rating, 95th percentile).

Even while limited in the half court, the Bucks’ natural advantages — coupled with a bit of positional ingenuity — gave the Warriors trouble in half-court defense:

A quick “ghost” screen forces a switch, placing Anthony Lamb onto Antetokounmpo, who deems Lamb worthy enough of being a victim of an isolation post-up. Focus on what happens on the weak side when Antetokounmpo begins backing down:

12/13/22

The Bucks are fond of picking on opponents’ size, or lack thereof. The Warriors are glaringly smaller across the board. Hiding small personnel on the weak side when defending has its advantages — but it is also prone to having undersized help coming over to defend penetration or post-ups, which is what happens

above when the Bucks park Allen in the dunker spot to render the help (Donte DiVincenzo) ineffective due to lack of size.

Rarely do the Warriors get beat by size. Through playing small, the Warriors built a dynasty predicated on running traditional bigs off the floor and forcing them to play their own game of fast-paced small ball. However, the Bucks are anything but traditional.

Lopez is a force at the rim. Antetokounmpo’s versatility and freakish physicality can give anyone trouble, but more so against an undersized unit. Bobby Portis is one of the league’s premier role players and bench stalwarts.

Meanwhile, the Warriors are too small, too disadvantaged athletically, and lack the requisite depth to match the Bucks toe-to-toe. Things may be different during their second regular season matchup, but as things stand, the Bucks are simply the much better team as presently constructed.

The marquee 2022 NBA Finals rematch between the Golden State Warriors and the Boston Celtics was much anticipated — if only for what transpired half a year ago between two of the league’s top defenses.

In one corner were the Warriors, a team that finished just behind the Celtics in terms of points allowed per 100 possessions. Their defensive rating of 107.6 was 4.7 points better than league average last season, with a half-court defensive rating of 91.2 that was third in the league and was 4.4 points better than

league average, per Cleaning the Glass (which eliminates end-of-quarter heaves and garbage time).

Stephen Curry & Klay Thompson Combine for 66 Points vs. Celtics

The Warriors’ brand of defensive versatility allowed them to play multiple schemes and pick-and-roll coverages. If the situation warranted it, they would play drop to minimize help and keep ball-screen possessions a two-on-two endeavor. They certainly had the personnel and lineup configurations to switch almost

every screen, on or off the ball. They had the wherewithal to rotate behind aggressive coverages such as screen-level meetups or traps. To throw off opponents, they would even employ funky zone configurations and “junk” defensive alignments such as a box-and-one or a triangle-and-two.

To summarize, they had every ounce of what made a team a championship-caliber defense.

In the other corner, the Celtics were the best defensive unit in the league last season, leading the league in terms of points allowed per 100 possessions. They limited opponents to the tune of a 106.9 defensive rating, 5.4 points better than league average. Their 90.4 half-court defensive rating also led the league and

was 5.2 points better than league average.

They had the distinction of being the switchiest team in the league, buoyed by a roster that had the capacity to switch almost every on or off-ball screening action. Per Second Spectrum, the Celtics switched the most off-ball actions last season (15.2 per 100 possessions). They were second behind the Miami Heat in

terms of the rate of ball screens they switched (28.6 per 100 possessions).

In theory, they were built to stifle a Warriors offense that was predicated on a multitude of off-ball movement and screening actions. We’ve seen the formula before from teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Houston Rockets — switch everything, keep things flattened, and force the Warriors to rely on late-clock

shot making.

Of course, the Warriors short-circuited such plans on their way to titles. With the Celtics, the method with which they used to bypass the Celtics’ switching tendencies was simple: run continuous ball screens for Steph Curry and punish a defense that wasn’t keen on being put in rotation.

This season, the Warriors defense (112.4 overall defensive rating, 13th; 96.7 half-court defense, 18th) has experienced a precipitous fall-off. A bunch of factors have contributed to this: post-championship malaise, fatigue, and personnel downgrades, to name a few. The trademark defensive versatility that powered

them to a title has been sporadic — sometimes outright absent.

The Celtics, on the other hand, are on track to become the most efficient offense in NBA history (121.0 offensive rating, 7.9 points better than league average). Their excellence in the half court (107.8 offensive rating, 11.6 points better than league average) has been the main driver of their early season success.

Much like the Warriors, however, their defense has largely struggled to return to its elite status. They’re seventh in overall (non-garbage-time) defensive rating (111.5) — good, but far from transcendent. They’re just below the Warriors in half-court defense (96.9 defensive rating, 19th). The absence of their main

defensive anchor in Robert Williams III has certainly played a huge part, while the recent loss of Al Horford — a coverage-versatile big — hasn’t helped them in any regard.

Klay Thompson Drops 34 POINTS Full Highlights vs Celtics 🔥

This first regular season matchup was intriguing in the sense of how much carryover there was going to be from the Finals, especially in terms of defensive coverages. How will the Warriors — without their best wing defender in Andrew Wiggins and having lost key defensive personnel over the offseason — cover

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown? How will they account for the Celtics’ three-happy tendencies, one that has been the main driver of their league-best offense?

On the Celtics’ end, will they do anything different against Curry ball-screen possessions? Will they continue to switch actions endlessly, as was their brand last season? How will they account for the absence of two of their most important defensive personnel?

The answer to the question of ball-screen coverage came faster than expected — and to a certain degree, it was quite shocking in the sense that they elected to do nothing different:

Off the split action in which Jordan Poole curls around the Kevon Looney flare screen, Poole makes use of Looney’s screen anew. Blake Griffin — a somewhat scheme-limited center — is in deep drop. Jaylen Brown is no slouch when it comes to screen navigation, but Looney catches just enough of him to free Poole for a pull-up bomb.

Drop coverage does have its uses: as aforementioned, it prevents a defense from having to be put in rotation, spending less energy defending swing-swing ball movement. It also results in a favorable shot profile if done correctly — fewer shots at the rim (the Celtics are second in opponent rim rate), more mid-

rangers forced (they allow the highest mid-range rate) and fewer three-point looks allowed (fourth in opponent three-point rate).

It was somewhat crucial for the Warriors to establish some sort of mid-range game to beat the Celtics’ drop coverage. Klay Thompson — who finished with 34 points on 26 shots (63.2 TS%) — took it upon himself to be the Warriors’ resident mid-range merchant.

Although it’s not ideal nor sustainable for Thompson to take mid-range pull-ups off of several dribbles, he was able to make it work against the Celtics’ drop — and accordingly punished it:

These are the kinds of shots the Celtics will happily take on the chin, but just like with every coverage, it comes with risks. If teams are able to establish a mid-range rhythm, the gamble turns into a risky endeavor. Drop may not put your team in rotation, but there are still exploitable gaps.

Thompson manages to touch the paint against a drop that has more or less contained him — but Brown falls ever so slightly behind, which puts all the pressure on Griffin to navigate the middle ground. Brown tries to peel off toward Looney but is too late to stop the pocket pass and too small to affect Looney on the finish.

Even Poole had success in the mid-range against drop — which may have come from reading the scouting report on the Celtics’ defensive shot profile, which states that they allow the second-highest shots from floater range (interestingly, just behind the Warriors):

Even while having extensive footage on what happens to defenses when they play drop coverage on the greatest shooter of all time — some of which most likely include their own experiences during the NBA Finals — the Celtics were still adamant about putting all the pressure on the on-ball defender and electing to drop their big.

While the Celtics may possess arguably the best corps of screen-navigating point-of-attack defenders in the league, it still doesn’t justify this kind of possession:

While the Celtics had flashes of shutting down the Warriors’ off-ball movement and screening through their switching, the Warriors had more success than expected at getting their motion offense going. Possessions rarely died on a whimper, with the ball continuously popping, personnel moving around like a perpetual

motion machine, and hubs relentlessly hunting for cutters and shooters curling around screens and handoffs.

On the other hand, the Celtics offense had massive trouble creating advantages. Some of their troubles came through unfavorable variance — open shots they’d normally make didn’t fall in — but it can’t account for how crisp the Warriors were in terms of rotations, while also taking into account conditional switching

— i.e., switching when it was acceptable, and fighting over screens whenever switching wasn’t the answer.

The Celtics are fond of using off-ball wide pindowns for Tatum like the one above to force defenses to make tough choices: do you switch a smaller defender onto him, or do you fight over the screen in an effort to stay home?

The Warriors chose the latter option — and were brilliant in its execution. Curry “tags” Tatum on some sort off-ball hedge in order to give Thompson ample time to recover, after which Curry himself recovers back toward Marcus Smart. With no advantage created, Tatum tries to isolate against Thompson, but is forced into a turnover.

Credit: Fadeaway World

Credit: Fadeaway World

The Warriors were able to run the necessary shooters off the line, gave the Celtics a bit of their own switching medicine, navigated and fought over screens with verve, were sharp in their rotations and “X-outs”, and let the personnel who they were fine with shooting the ball chuck from outside.

Tatum struggled mightily. He managed only 18 points on an inefficient 6-of-21 from the field. Again, some of the shots he took were shots he’d normally make — but others were misses against stifling defense, especially whenever he tried to force things inside.

Remember when I mentioned at the top of this article that the Celtics were second in the league (28.1%) in terms of opponent rim rate? The team above them: the Warriors, who allow only 24.8% of their opponents’ shots to be taken within four feet of the rim — 10 percentage points better than league average, per Cleaning the Glass.

In this battle of defensive schemes and coverages, the Warriors notched an important victory. Regaining their identity of defensive versatility — against the team with the best record in the NBA, no less — is an important stepping-stone at this juncture of the regular season.

They were able to limit the best offense in the NBA to a offensive rating of 104.9 and a half-court offensive rating of 93.3 — no doubt the best defensive performance of the season.

This is the kind of defense that won these Warriors their fourth NBA title in eight years. Consistency will be key as well as proper usage of personnel and correct mixing and matching of lineup combinations. More importantly, this win will go a long way toward team morale.

If anything, this win proved that the Warriors still have the juice to contend for another championship. But to do so, they will have to continuously cross their t’s and dot their i’s, as they did against the Celtics.

The Golden State Warriors face the Boston Celtics in a highly anticipated showdown on Saturday. However, they are making sure fans won’t forget that the day is not just about the two teams but about Bill Russell as well.

Golden State has already revealed its plan to honor the legendary Russell during the game by raising his jersey number to the rafters. It’s a special moment since Russell is a son of Oakland and made a massive impact in the Bay Area. Not to mention that his team where he spent his 13-year NBA career, the Celtics,

will be there to witness the moment.

Prior to that, however, the Warriors shared an emotional tribute video to remember and acknowledge Russell’s enormous contributions to the NBA, the Celtics and Oakland. Steve Kerr, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were among the key Dubs members to speak in the tribute, with Kerr sharing how “the game of

basketball would not be what it is today” without Russell.

Curry added, “Bill Russell is the ultimate pioneer in terms of battling through a very difficult time in our country, not only balancing his basketball career, but [also] his place as a human being and society.”

It is certainly a beautiful gesture from the Warriors for Bill Russell, highlighting the legacy he left in the NBA and in society in general. While many NBA fans know him as an 11-time champion, there is certainly more to the legendary big man.

Russell passed away last August at the age of 88. But while he’s gone, his legacy continues to live.

The Pacers, missing six players with injuries or illness, jumped out to a 22-12 lead as Golden State started 5 for 17.

Thompson knocked down three straight 3-pointers — all from the right wing — to tie the game at 42 with 4:51 left in the second quarter before a Pacers timeout. Thompson also dished out an assist on Jonathan Kuminga's layup before his trio of 3s and nearly had another when Kuminga was fouled and made both

free throws to cap a 20-2 run 3:40 before halftime.

Thompson scored 60 against Indiana over three quarters on Dec. 5, 2016. On Monday, he passed Jason Kidd (1,988) for 13th place on the 3-pointers list and now has 1,990.

“I remember people being mad at me for not keeping him out there on the floor so that he could try to get 70, but we had a big lead and at the end of the third it was clear cut we were going to win the game,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “It was an easy decision. I just remember, we've seen Klay get hot a lot

over the years, but there's a few games that stand out and that's one of them.”

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Andrew Wiggins shoots more than 100 3-pointers most practices, as many reps as needed “until I feel good.”

The ball is smooth coming out of his hand, he's in position, the ball is going through the net.

On Saturday night, Wiggins almost made his career-best ninth 3-pointer, but his foot was on the line.

He dazzled from beyond the arc, scoring a season-best 36 points and matching his career high with eight 3s, leading the Golden State Warriors past the Houston Rockets 120-101 in the second game of back-to-backs for both teams.

“I felt like I was just flowing,” Wiggins said. “My shot felt good, my teammates did a great job finding me and getting me open shots and good looks.”

Poole throws flashy no-look Dime to Draymond

Stephen Curry scored 30 points with eight 3s of his own to go with 10 assists. Jordan Poole started in place of a resting Klay Thompson and added 21 points and five assists, one night after a 30-point performance off the bench with a season-high seven 3s.

Wiggins knocked down consecutive 3s midway through the third quarter and shot 14 of 19 overall as the Warriors won their 10th straight at home.

Kevin Porter Jr. scored 20 points and Tari Eason contributed 13 off the bench for Houston.

Golden State became just the second team in NBA history to make 20 3-pointers in four of five games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The Jazz did so from Nov. 27-Dec. 8, 2021.

The Warriors raced to a 22-4 lead, making their initial seven shots, as Houston began 2 for 11. Golden State led 39-23 after one quarter.

“It was a phenomenal first 18 minutes, I thought that was maybe the best stretch we’ve had all year to start the game and then halfway through the second quarter, maybe eight minutes left in the second quarter we didn’t have any turnovers, we had like 16 assists, we were defending, rebounding, doing everything

right and then we just lost our focus,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “That’s our biggest challenge right now is trying to maintain our focus long enough to not give up leads and allow teams back in and I thought that’s what happened tonight.”

A DAY FOR KLAY

Thompson sat on the second game in consecutive nights, as has been standard practice for him to not play both contests — for now, that is. This marked the Warriors' fifth back-to-back of 15 total.

“The hope is that he will play back-to-backs later this year. Today, he will go through really good court work to try and simulate as best we can what a back-to-back would feel like for him,” Kerr said.

Zach LaVine's 3-pointer with 2:27 to play got Chicago within 110-109 before Green answered from deep moments later on the other end.

DeMar DeRozan Sinks the inside Bucket for the Bulls

“That was huge, one-point game at that point,” coach Steve Kerr said. “That was the shot of the game. They were the aggressor the whole fourth and we were not playing well. We had nothing going on that possession.”

Klay Thompson added 26 points with a key 3-pointer with 6:03 to play on a pass from Curry after Chicago had pulled within 105-101. Curry had 19 points, 11 rebounds and six assists playing in foul trouble. He was whistled for his sixth foul with 1:19 left but the Warriors challenged the call and were successful.

Poole shot 11 for 18 and 7 of 13 from deep, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and making four of the Warriors’ seven 3-pointers. BACK IN THE DAY

Kerr and former Bulls teammates Bill Wennington commiserated over a largely forgettable boxscore from back in the day found and printed by Warriors senior vice president of communications Raymond Ridder.

It was a 110-87 Bulls road win against Charlotte on Nov. 15, 1996, in which Kerr and Wennington went a combined 0 for 6 — each missed three shots — with no points between them with Kerr playing almost 24 minutes and nearly seven for Wennington. Michael Jordan scored 38.

OBSERVING STEPH

“Everybody can see the shooting and the shot-making and obviously I would just imagine the amount of time and preparation and work he’s put into that. But the thing to me that always stands out with him is just his stamina and endurance," Bulls coach Billy Donovan said. “You know it’s almost like he’s a marathon

runner, just not going to stop. And it’s not even necessarily the hard chase, it’s the relentlessness in which he does it every single time.”

TIP-INS

Bulls: Chicago is 1-5 on the road vs. the Western Conference. ... The Bulls haven't beaten the Warriors since a 94-87 win on March 2, 2017, at United Center.

Warriors: Poole picked up a technical for celebrating while on the bench midway through the fourth. ... The Warriors have won 11 straight and 14 of 15 against the Bulls and eight in a row at home. Golden State's only better winning streak against one opponent is 11 consecutive victories vs. Cleveland. ... Golden

State is 10-1 at home and the unbeaten run is the best for the team on its home floor since 11 in a row from Oct. 30-Dec. 3, 2021.

UP NEXT

Bulls: Visit Sacramento on Sunday to conclude a six-city road trip.

Warriors - 113 Mavericks - 116

DALLAS -- — Tim Hardaway Jr. had to watch when his Dallas Mavericks lost to the Golden State Warriors in last season's Western Conference finals.

He found himself in the middle of some playoff intensity in their first meeting this season.

Hardaway hit a go-ahead 3-pointer lateLuka Doncic scored 41 points in his NBA-leading fifth triple-double and the Mavericks held off the Warriors 116-113 on Tuesday night.

Dallas ended a four-game losing streak, the longest in two seasons under coach Jason Kidd. Golden State, a winner in five games last spring on the way to the title, lost for just the second time in seven games after a slow start to its season.

“For me, it was,” Hardaway, who missed the 2022 postseason recovering from a broken foot, said of whether he felt the playoff vibe.

Mavs hang on to win as Klay can't connect at the buzzer

Warriors @ Mavs Trade Buckets Late In Thrilling Finish 👀

“Just because of the excitement, and me not being able to play in the Western Conference finals. Just wanting to go out there and compete, have fun. Playing against the champs.”

Stephen Curry scored 32 points for Golden State, including a quick-draw 3-pointer over Maxi Kleber for a 110-108 lead, but Dallas responded by scoring the next five points to go ahead for good.

Hardaway, who scored 22 points, answered Curry's 3 on Doncic's 12th and final assist with 1:49 remaining. Josh Green's short jumper came after Doncic blocked Curry's layup try.

“Hardaway’s shot was the key, I thought, down the stretch,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “We have to expect that teams are going to make shots against us. We’re going to be circled on every team’s calendar.”

The Warriors were down two when Curry was called for traveling — the 10th of the game between both teams — with 10 seconds remaining.

Ja Morant’s 4-word reaction to ‘crazy’ Mavs game vs. Warriors

11/29/22

On Twitter, Morant shared how much he loved the “crazy” battle. During the game, he was hyped with the intense trading of buckets, so much so that he described it as “high level NBA basketball.”

To be fair to Ja Morant, it was indeed a wild game that wasn’t decided until the buzzer. Even making it better, Luka Doncic outshined Stephen Curry and pulled off another historic game with his 41-point triple-double (12 rebounds and 12 assists).

Morant has been one of the most electrifying players in the NBA today, so it speaks volumes when he has high praises for a game like that.

The Mavs won’t be meeting Morant’s Grizzlies again until March, but hopes are high they’ll also play some high-level basketball when they face off against each other again.

Golden State had one more chance after Dorian Finney-Smith missed one of two free throws to keep the deficit at three. Klay Thompson got a good look off for 3, but the shot was short as Curry's Splash Brother finished 1 of 6 from deep with five points.

Doncic also had 12 rebounds in his 51st career triple-double.

11/29/22

Jonathan Kuminga had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Golden State, which trailed by 17 in the first quarter but took its first lead before halftime.

Spencer Dinwiddie scored 14 points for Dallas before he was ejected for a flagrant-2 penalty when his elbow hit Jordan Poole in the face on an offensive foul early in the fourth quarter.

TIP-INS

Warriors: Kuminga and Anthony Lamb had eight points apiece off the bench in the second quarter, combining to go 7 of 8 from the field. Lamb hit consecutive 3-pointers early in the quarter. Lamb scored 11. ... Draymond Green had his third consecutive double-figure game with 12 points. He had just two in the previous 11.

Mavericks: Four-time All-Star G Kemba Walker signed, but the timeline for him to play is uncertain. The club hopes to get him on the court for practice Wednesday. The 32-year-old with a history of knee issues was unsigned the first six weeks of the season. ... Josh Green scored seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.

UP NEXT

Warriors: Chicago visits Friday to start a three-game homestand. The Warriors have a 10-game winning streak in the series.

“I’ve said for years Draymond is kind of the heartbeat of our team,” coach Steve Kerr said.

Klay Thompson went 5 for 8 from deep for 21 points and tied Joe Johnson (1,978) for 15th place on the NBA's career list for 3-pointers, helping the Warriors raise their perplexing road record to 2-9.

November 28, 2022

Andrew Wiggins added 17 points against his old team, and the Warriors went 20 for 47 from 3-point range to move above the .500 mark for the first time in a month.

“We’ve been in a good groove lately," Wiggins said. "We’re playing together.”

The Warriors went 2 for 12 from 3-point range in the second quarter and still led by 20 points at the half, fueled by a faster tempo their offense has been at in recent weeks.

“Steve just told us to play for each other and to simplify things and when we do that,” Thompson said, “we’re the best in the world.”

Anthony Edwards scored 26 points for the Wolves. They were outrebounded 47-31 and allowed their highest opponent score of the season.

“Our identity right now is super inconsistent, very Jekyll and Hyde,” coach Chris Finch said. "We’re not as physical or tough as I’d like us to be.”

The Wolves finally came to life early in the fourth quarter with a 19-4 run that brought them within 10 points for their closest margin since midway through the first quarter. Curry, who had missed his first three shots after re-entering at the 8:25 mark, coolly swished a 3 from the wing out of a Warriors timeout to

stem the tide and push the lead to 121-108.

Anthony Edwards shows off vision with nice dish vs. Golden State Warriors

Karl-Anthony Towns added 21 points and Jaylen Nowell had 16 points off the bench for the Wolves, whose bad habit of standing around on offense was more glaring against the passing-and-cutting Warriors. The Wolves lost for the second time in two days after their five-game winning streak was stopped with a loss

at Charlotte on Saturday.

“Teams like Golden State, you can just see it in the way that they operate,” Towns said. “It's a well-oiled machine. Everything they do has such cohesiveness to it, and that’s because of the time they have spent with each other.”

PUSHING THE PACE

The Wolves played without Jaden McDaniels, their best perimeter defender who was sidelined by an illness, against a Warriors team that leads the league with 13 games of 30-plus assists and has long been the league king of the 3.

Wiggins started with a soaring left-handed slam off a lob from Green just 12 seconds into the game. The Warriors made 17 of their first 21 shots for a 40-17 lead, built by a 28-4 run over a 4:27 stretch that Nowell finally halted a 3. The 47-27 deficit after one quarter was the largest for the Wolves this season.

“Guys are in shape now and running deep to the corners, and it’s really opening the floor up,” Green said. “And then most importantly our defense has picked up.”

Lauri Markkanen scored 24 points for the Jazz, who managed just 11 assists in the first two quarters.

Curry knocked down a fall-away 3-pointer, got fouled and converted the four-point play at the 8:40 mark of the first quarter as the Warriors ran out to a 17-point lead, but they couldn't hold it.

The Warriors have won eight straight at home for their longest unbeaten run on their own floor since 11 in a row from Oct. 30-Dec. 3, 2021. They also have a five-game home winning streak against Utah.

Jordan Clarkson and Kelly Olynyk each had 21 points for Utah. The Jazz have lost three straight to match their longest skid of the season that has come during this stretch of six defeats in the last eight.

SAN FRANCSICO -- — When the opposing defenders focus too much attention on Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins lets loose and makes them pay.

Wiggins scored a season-high 31 points, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers during a key stretch midway through the third quarter, and the Golden State Warriors beat the Los Angeles Clippers 124-107 on Wednesday night.

“Steph's going to be Steph, always,” Wiggins said. “Tonight the ball was moving and found a lot of people, made some shots.”

Andrew Wiggins Has Season-High 31 Points to Lead Warriors Over Clippers

Terance Mann goes baseline for a Clippers Dunk

Wiggins shot 12 for 18 and matched his most 3-pointers this season with six in his third straight 20-point performance.

“He’s shooting the lights out. He’s just been so consistent from the field and from the 3-point line,” coach Steve Kerr said. “You see how comfortable he is in our offense, constantly slipping to the rim."

Curry added 22 points, nine assists and six rebounds, while Thompson scored 18 points. He hit his first three shots and two 3-pointers and four of his initial five shots on the way to 15 points in the opening quarter.

After a slow start this season finding his shooting groove, Thompson was coming off a season-best 41-point game at Houston on Sunday in which he made 10 3s.

Marcus Morris Sr. had 19 points to lead the Clippers and Terance Mann added 17. Amir Coffey made his initial three field goals, but Los Angeles went just 5 for 13 from long range in the first half to fall behind 66-47 at the break as the Warriors shot 56.5%.

John Wall was limited to nine points on 2-for-8 shooting and missed all three of his 3-point tries.

Clippers star Kawhi Leonard sat out with a sprained right ankle after he landed on it Monday while trying to block a shot in the fourth quarter Monday night in a home victory over Utah.

Kerr wants to use Draymond Green more regularly with the second unit when possible to give the reserves a reliable ballhandler and floor leader given their recent struggles.

“It looks good and we’ll continue to do it,” Kerr said of Green leading the second team.

Early in the fourth, Green drove the length of the floor and into the pain then dished off to Anthony Lamb for a layup that made it 103-82 with 10:41 to play. Green finished with 12 assists, nine points and seven rebounds.

“It’s huge for the confidence of the guys,” Green said.

NEW ORLEANS -- — Brandon Ingram scored a season-high 34 points in the same game that Zion Williamson returned from a three-game absence, and the New Orleans Pelicans routed the depleted Golden State Warriors 128-83 on Monday night.

“He was fantastic all game,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said of Ingram, who hit 12 of 19 shots and whose repertoire included transition 3s, driving dunks and late-shot-clock turnaround fade-aways. “He played with force. When he decided to go (to the basket), he went quickly. ... It was just good to see him put

Playing one night after winning on the road for the first time this season at Houston, the Warriors scratched Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins from the lineup in New Orleans.

"This was just a night for the young guys to get a chance to play and it was a tough night," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "New Orleans played really well.”

Williamson played 23 minutes in his first game back from a bruised right foot, scoring nine points.

“I was very excited to be back out there,” Williamson said. “We got a great win. The score speaks for itself.”

Jose Alvarado makes a great defensive play for the steal

Green said there was no predetermined limit on Williamson's playing time, which was dictated more by the size of New Orleans' lead.

Devonte Graham scored 19 for the Pelicans, who took the lead for good less than two minutes into the game. Jonas Valanciunas had 10 points and 13 rebounds, and CJ McCollum scored 15.

Jordan Poole scored 26 for Golden State, which committed 28 turnovers while falling to 1-9 on the road.

Herbert Jones gets up for the beautiful Slam

“The effort was there but we didn’t execute very well," Kerr said. "A lot of that is one me. I’ve got to work with these guys and do a better job of teaching execution and getting our guys to understand the value of the ball.”

The starting lineup for Golden State was usual starting center Kevon Looney, along with forwards Anthony Lamb and Jonathan Kuminga, and guards Donte DiVincenzo and Poole.

Less than nine minutes in, Graham's 3 as he was fouled gave New Orleans a 26-9 lead. Rookie Dyson Daniels' finger roll made it 35-11 before the first quarter ended.

SITTING STARS

The game marked the second time this season that Golden State visited New Orleans on the back end of games on back-to-back nights and chose to sit Curry, Thompson, Green and Wiggins. The Smoothie King Center was packed for both games. The Warriors will not be back in New Orleans again during the regular season.

Curry last played a game in New Orleans on May 4, 2021, with just 3,700 in attendance because of pandemic restrictions. His last game in New Orleans before the pandemic was Oct. 28, 2019.

“We understand we have a responsibility in this league, with the franchise that we are, to try to put on the best show we can every night, but that also includes maintaining guys’ health in the long term,” Kerr said. “We don’t control the schedule. ... I feel awful for the fans, but ultimately our responsibility is to make

sure our players are around for the whole year.”

Jose Alvarado scored 10, highlighted by his back-court steal of an inbound pass, which he quickly converted into a floating layup.

“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Green said with a smile when asked about Alvarado’s penchant for back-court steals. “I’m sure teams are scouting him because I can see players, when they catch it, start to look behind them. I don’t know what to do about it but just let him do it. It’s a gift.”

Story by Ishaan Bhattacharya

Steve Kerr sat Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green one day after the Warriors ended their winless road game streak against the bottom-feeding Houston Rockets. The Warriors faced the New Orleans Pelicans on the second night of a back-to-back tonight and lost by 45 points as the star trio sat.

Steve Kerr has explained why he benched the older stars of the team on the second night of a back-to-back for the second time this season given the struggles the Warriors are going through right now.

“The schedule has not been kind to us or the city of New Orleans in terms of us having back-to-backs in the midst of really brutal scheduling, and us having guys who are banged up and older, played a decade or more of playoff basketball. But we feel it’s imperative and our performance team feels it’s

imperative to get ahead of the (injuries) that these guys have.

"We just can’t risk that. And I do feel terrible for fans here. But as I said, unfortunately, that’s the way the schedule laid out and it’s too bad.” (h/t SF Chronicle)

You can't win the title if you're not in the playoffs and Kerr is confident the Warriors can sacrifice one game in November to ensure health for their stars throughout the season to ensure the Warriors are a top-six seed in the West, something people still expect them to become as the season wears on.

How Much Longer Until The Warriors Rebound?

The Warriors are among 10 out of the 30 teams in the NBA to already be at double-digit losses for the season, something NBA analysts did not predict to be in the cards for the Warriors when the season started.

The young stars of the Warriors were center stage tonight and couldn't live up to the challenges on-court against a strong Pelicans team. Hopefully, they can find some rhythm sooner than later, or the Warriors might have to start looking at the trade market to get some veterans to help stabilize the ship.

HOUSTON -- — Klay Thompson scored a season-high 41 points and Steph Curry added 33 as the Golden State Warriors beat the Houston Rockets 127-120 on Sunday night for their first road win.

The Warriors snapped an 0-8 start away from home to improve to 8-9 on the season. Golden State has won five of its last seven games following a 3-7 start.

“It didn’t sit well with us, our 0-8 record,” Curry said. “We had to scratch and claw to get this one, so to get that monkey off your back and feel good about yourselves outside of the Chase Center, it matters.”

Curry hit a big 3 just inside of two minutes remaining that doubled the Warriors’ lead to 121-115. Curry made another with less than 40 seconds remaining to put Golden State up by nine, and he gestured to the crowd like he put the game to sleep.

“I surprised myself with that shot,” Curry said. “Me and Draymond put our hands above our heads like we really won something, kind of making fun of ourselves for our slow start.”

Andrew Wiggins hit 6 of 11 3s and scored 22 points for Golden State.

Kevin Porter Jr. led Houston with 30 points, Jabari Smith Jr. had 22, and Jalen Green added 16. Rookie Tari Eason scored a career-high 19 points and added eight rebounds off the bench.

Golden State jumped to an 11-0 lead from the tip and led 40-28 after 20 first-quarter points from Thompson. Houston quickly answered, opening up the second quarter on a 17-2 run to build a small lead.

The Rockets led 65-61 at halftime.

“We played a great team, we got down big and fought back,” Rockets coach Stephen Silas said. “We took the lead, we were neck-in-neck down the stretch, and they had to make some great shots to beat us.

“We have to learn some discipline, but this is a team that’s been together for years and won championships and all that. We should definitely be proud. It’s disappointing that we didn’t get the win, for sure, but nobody in that locker room should have their head down.”

The loss dropped Houston to 3-14, the worst record in the Western Conference.

Warriors - 111 Knicks - 101

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Steve Kerr wanted Klay Thompson to relax a little, let the game come to him.

And Thompson is certainly showing signs of finding his shooting groove again.

“I thought a lot about that,” Thompson said about being patient.

He scored 20 points with four 3-pointers, Stephen Curry added 24 points, 10 assists and six rebounds, and the Golden State Warriors beat the New York Knicks 111-101 on Friday night.

Andrew Wiggins added 20 points with seven rebound and Draymond Green contributed 10 points, nine rebounds and seven assists with two blocked shots.

Thompson hit 4 of his first 6 shots with three 3s for 11 early points.

Julius Randle gets the hoop and the Harm

“It seemed like every time Klay just made an extra pass, the ball started to move and then we got a wide open shot,” Kerr said. “We ended up with 32 assists. It started with early on Klay taking a more patient approach. And then the game rewarded him.”

Jordan Poole scored 13 points off the bench and JaMychal Green 12. He credited a team meeting earlier Friday as the Warriors had a tough conversation about their struggles and “addressed the elephants in the room.”

Thompson called it “a very constructive meeting ... an incredible time of growth.”

“I feel like tonight was the best game we've put together on the defensive end,” he said.

HOME AND ROAD

The Warriors are 7-1 at home and 0-8 on the road.

“I’m actually much more interested in why we’re not playing well on the road than why were are playing well at home,” Kerr said. “I expect to play well at home. We’ve got a good record here over the years and good players, great fans. No reason we shouldn’t control our home court. But we got to start putting it

together on the road, too.”

Golden State snapped a three-game home skid to the Knicks and has won its last eight in New York.

“To me, the road record is directly connected to the defense,” Kerr said.

Steph Curry's Career Best Behind the Back Moves

Stephen Curry, playmaking magician

The reigning Finals was a monster in Golden State’s loss to Phoenix, racking up 50 points on 28 shots to give his otherwise lifeless team a puncher’s chance to earn its first road win of the season.

Curry took a much different approach from the friendly confines of Chase Center, going out of his way to help his teammates find rhythm offensively. The result was five assists in the game’s opening three minutes, two of which went for layups and the other pair Thompson triples.

Curry’s effort to move the ball clearly rubbed off on the Warriors at large, too. They assisted on 14 of their first 15 baskets, pushing the ball to create easy looks in transition and consistently passing up good shots for great ones.

Impressive as Golden State’s ball and man movement was all night long, though, Curry’s singular impact still loomed largest to his team’s success offensively—and it wasn’t always with the pass.

Here’s the play Dub Nation will remember most from Friday’s game. It’ll be played on Curry’s personal highlight reel for years and years to come.

Steve-Kerr-reveals-if-he’s-‘surprised’-by-Klay-Thompson-32-days-after-his-return

Klay Thompson promises they will. Still, after his encouraging performance in the Golden State Warriors’ 111-101 win over the New York Knicks on Friday, there’s reason to believe Thompson’s early-season struggles will soon subside for good.

Thompson scored 20 points in his team’s wire-to-wire victory, going 8-of-16 from the field to hit at least 50% his shots for the first time in 2022-23.

Curry scores 50 points, but Suns beat Warriors 130-119

Curry's 11th career 50-point game isn't enough for the Warriors

Stephen Curry drops 50 points on 17-of-28 shooting, but the Warriors fall to the Suns on Wednesday night.

PHOENIX -- — Devin Booker stepped back for a 3-pointer in the closing minute of the third quarter as Golden State's Stephen Curry gamely tried to stay with him, putting a hand in his face. Booker made the shot anyway as a frustrated Curry dropped his head.

No matter how many points the Warriors superstar scored, the Suns came right back with an answer.

This young fan couldn't contain his emotions after Steph gave him a head nod

Cameron Payne had a career-high 29 points, Booker added 27 and Phoenix easily overcame Curry’s 50-point night to beat struggling Golden State 130-119 on Wednesday. All five Suns starters scored in double figures.

“It's important to have a team,” Booker said about the balanced production. “That gives you longevity and will get us through a season.”

Devin Booker gets the and-1 to fall

The Suns controlled most of the game despite Curry's scoring. The eight-time All-Star made 17 of 28 shots, going 7 of 11 from 3-point range.

The problem for the Warriors was nobody else was helping. Klay Thompson finished with 19 points but shot just 6 of 17. The Warriors — defending NBA champs — fell to 6-9 for the season, including 0-8 on the road.

Curry didn't have much to say about his 50 points, instead focusing on the team's struggles.

“Losing becomes a habit if you don’t fix it,” Curry said. “We avoided that for a very long time. We are very aware of who we are and our potential. The losing does get old really quick.”

Said Warriors coach Steve Kerr: “I think for right now, we are just scattered. It's a pickup game. It's a pickup game out there.”

Curry's scoring prowess is expected, but it was countered by one of the best games of Payne's career. Starting in place of the injured Chris Paul, the 6-foot-3 guard made 9 of 17 shots, including 6 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Coach Monty Williams praised Payne's play but also criticized the guard's late-game decisions, including picking up a flagrant foul.

“Cam can score the ball and he had seven assists to go with it,” Williams said. “But in closing moments, he has to be better. We don't need all that silliness at the end of games.”

The Suns led 103-89 going into the fourth quarter. The Warriors quickly cut into that margin but couldn't get closer than eight points. Damion Lee hit back-to-back 3-pointers against his former team to keep the Suns comfortably ahead.

The Suns shot 21 of 40 (52.5%) from 3-point range and had 33 assists. Mikal Bridges had 23 points and a career-high nine assists. Torrey Craig added 13 points and 10 rebounds.

HOT FIRST HALF

Steph Curry Drops 31 1st-Half Points

It was a frenetic first half with both teams shooting very well — particularly behind the arc. The Suns led 72-65 at the break, with Curry scoring 31 points. Payne had 18 for the Suns and Booker had 16.

Curry was at his best in the first half, making 10 of 13 shots from the field, including 4 of 5 3-pointers. The two-time MVP came into the game averaging about 31 points per game and hit that mark with a free throw near the end of the second quarter.

“Steph is going to have Steph moments,” Williams said.

Jock Landale runs the floor for a transition dunk

The Warriors were basically at full strength while the Suns were missing two injured starters — Paul and Cam Johnson — and a key reserve in Landry Shamet.

The two teams were playing again a little more than three weeks after the Suns beat the Warriors by nearly 30 points. That game was notable for seven technical fouls and a verbal spat between Booker and Thompson that eventually resulted in Thompson's first career ejection.

DUBS WIN

Kingkaps7 GIF

SAN FRANCISCO -- — As Stephen Curry approaches his mid-30s, Steve Kerr marvels at the superstar's fitness and his ability to continue to take over games.

“You run out of adjectives to describe Steph’s play," Golden State's coach said.

Curry hit a tying 3-pointer with 1:18 to play, a go-ahead layup moments later off a perfect, long pass by Kevon Looney, then one more dagger 3 on the way to 40 points, rallying the Warriors past the Cleveland Cavaliers 106-101 on Friday night.

Donovan Mitchell had 29 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for Cleveland, but went down hard grabbing at his right ankle in the waning moments. He got up and hit a pair of free throws with 12.4 seconds left.

Curry extended his NBA record to 200 straight regular-season games with at least one 3-pointer and shot 6 of 11 from deep.

“He's just amazing night after night. He's in such great shape,” Kerr said. “If there's one area that he's dramatically better now than when I first got here eight years ago it's just his strength and conditioning."

“He's much bigger and stronger, much more capable of defending at a really high level and sustaining two-way basketball for an entire game and just knocking down shots from all over and finishing at the rim. He's unbelievable,” he said.

A rarity: Curry missed two free throws over the final 17.6 seconds, but delivered a second straight 40-point performance.

Evan Mobley had 20 points and 12 rebounds as Cleveland dropped a third straight following an eight-game winning streak.

Andrew Wiggins' short jumper with 8:48 remaining tied the game and Looney's layup the next time down put the Warriors ahead. Wiggins delivered a big dunk with 6:06 to play and finished with 20 points.

Klay Thompson struggled with his shot and went 3 of 13 for nine points for the Warriors. His 3 with 2:53 left made it 96-95.

“I feel like we had a great game plan going up until the last three minutes, we didn’t execute it the way we wanted to,” Cleveland's Caris LeVert said. “When you’re playing the Warriors you want other guys to beat you but I think Steph had eight, nine points down the stretch in the last in the last 2/3 minutes. So we

obviously can’t let that happen.”

Golden State's Draymond Green had 13 assists and 10 rebounds with two points. He was hit with a technical shortly before halftime and Kerr also received a T.

Jordan Poole came off the bench to score 18 points for Golden State, which is still trying to find the right combinations to get in sync consistently.

“I think it was our best defensive game,” Green said. “I think we were all locked in on that side of the ball.”

Steph Curry is fired up after his 3 gives Dubs the lead

‘You shut up!’: Warriors star Draymond Green’s intense confrontation with courtside fan goes completely viral

The season hasn’t exactly started out as planned for the defending champs Golden State Warriors. The Dubs are in the midst of a five-game losing streak as they stare down a 3-7 record to start their title defense. Understandably, there have been more than a few intense moments during this horrible run.

One of them involved Draymond Green, who himself could not help but clap back at a fan who was heckling him during a game

After a fan blatantly shouted at Green to “shut up,” the Warriors star immediately responded by telling the fan that he should be the one to keep his mouth shut. Draymond even stared the fan down, which prompted some intervention from security.

This incident went down last week during the Warriors’ 120-113 loss to the Charlotte Hornets. This was the start of the Dubs’ five-game road trip, which unfortunately for them, all resulted in losses.

NEW ORLEANS -- — Golden State coach Steve Kerr foreshadowed a plan to adjust playing time across his roster in the coming week.

Something needs to change if the Warriors intend to defend their NBA title.

Stephen Curry, Warriors enter Hall of Infamy with bleak record never seen from reigning champs

Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Warriors

Many fans were concerned after the Golden State Warriors dropped a close contest to the Orlando Magic, 130-129, despite Stephen Curry’s 39-point explosion. Their loss at Amway Center was their fourth straight, dropping them to 3-6 to begin the year as they remain winless amidst a rough trip on the road.

The Warriors’ Friday night clash against the New Orleans Pelicans, an exciting young team led by Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, was supposed to give them an opportunity to stop the bleeding.

The Warriors fell to 0-6 on the road, losing 114-105 to Brandon Ingram and the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night with Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins sidelined.

“Excited about getting home,” Kerr said after a winless, five-game road trip concluded. “Next week will be a great opportunity for us to get a lot of work in.

“We’re going to change up the rotations a little bit,” Kerr continued, adding that he's identified players “who maybe haven’t gotten a ton of minutes who are going to get a chance to play.”

More Jonathan Kuminga? Steve Kerr drops major hint as lineup changes loom

The Golden State Warriors were outlasted by the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday night, losing 114-105 after the home team pulled away late. Don’t mistake context behind the Warriors’ latest defeat for that of any other on their winless disaster of a five-game road trip, though.

Hype Lol Sticker by Golden State Warriors

The Pelicans, meanwhile, benefited from Ingram's return from a four-game absence because of a concussion. He scored 26 points on an array of drives and perimeter shots.

“Good to have him back, honestly. We needed his production tonight,” Pelicans coach Willie Green said. “He picked up some slack for us.”

CJ McCollum scored 20 points for New Orleans. So did reserve Larry Nance Jr., including several fourth-quarter dunks that kept Golden State at bay. Zion Williamson added 16 for New Orleans, highlighting his performance with a breakaway, windmill dunk set up by Jose Alvarado's steal.

“Our execution offensively has been great,” Nance said. "Having B.I. out there helps. ... He’s just so poised all the time.”

Jordan Poole had 20 points and nine assists for the Warriors. Kevon Looney was the only regular starter in uniform for Golden State's second game in two nights at the end of a winless five-game trip.

Kevon Looney gets the hoop and the harm

The Warriors are 3-7 overall. Among Western Conference teams, only Houston (1-8) has more losses.

Curry, Thompson, Green and Wiggins all were scratched after playing the previous night in a loss at Orlando.

The Warriors are not playing Thompson on back-to-back nights because of his anterior cruciate ligament and Achilles tendon injuries in 2019 and 2020. Green is under similar limitations because of a back injury last season. Curry was being rested because of elbow soreness and Wiggins because of a sore left foot.

A starting lineup that instead included Poole and fellow guard Moses Moody, along with forwards Anthony Lamb and Jonathan Kuminga, made the game competitive into the fourth quarter.

“Couldn’t get it done, but very happy with the effort,” Kerr said. “There’s a lot of good stuff to take from it.”

Ty Jerome, who scored 18 points, hit a 3 to pull the Warriors within 99-96 before the Pelicans steadily pulled away during the final six minutes.

Trey Murphy III's 3-pointer capped a 7-0 Pelicans spurt that began with Nance's dunk and layup and made it 111-101 with two minutes to go. Ingram, who also had five rebounds, five assists and two blocks, received a standing ovation when he checked out of the game in the final minute.

“It was a little weird being around so many people after 12 days, but I feel good," said Ingram, who recalled having sensitivity to light and constant headaches while he was out.

“I feel like I needed to make something happen,” Ingram added. “I was happy to see some go in and kind of get a rhythm and make some good passes for my teammates.”

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he appreciates that fans paid “good money” to see players on his team who sat out with the goal of preserving their long-term health.

“Ultimately the players' health is the No. 1 factor in our team's success and even our fans' satisfaction in the long run,” Kerr said.

He added that while some absences are unpredictable, "it would be wise” for fans to study schedules of teams they want to see and manage expectations when those teams are playing on consecutive nights at the end of a trip, as the Warriors were.

“Especially when you get a team with players who have past injuries like we do, or guys who are advanced age-wise,” Kerr said. “I apologize to any fans out there who were hoping to see those guys."

MIAMI -- — Upon review, Miami coach Erik Spoelstra had a good birthday. Jimmy Butler made sure of that.

Butler scored five straight points late to give Miami the lead, Max Strus led everyone with 24 and the Heat overcame a triple-double from Stephen Curry to beat the Golden State Warriors 116-109 on Tuesday night.

“Huge for our confidence,” Strus said.

‘Terrible call’: Chris Paul doubles down with Stephen Curry on ref callouts

Chris Paul, Stephen Curry, Jordan Poole, Steve Kerr, Warriors, Suns

Phoenix Suns point guard Chris Paul wasn’t dubbed the Point God for nothing. Over the past two games, Paul has posted an insane assist to turnover ratio of 27-to-1. However, he still felt hard done by the call that gave him his first turnover in 95 minutes worth of game time.

Butler scored 23 points, including a go-ahead three-point play with 1:48 left. Bam Adebayo scored 19, Duncan Robinson had 17 and Kyle Lowry 13 for Miami, which won on Spoelstra's 52nd birthday.

Curry had 23 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists for the Warriors (3-5), who dropped their third straight and are 0-4 on the road. Andrew Wiggins added 21 points and Klay Thompson scored 19.

“I thought our energy was better at times," Golden State's Draymond Green said. “But we've still got to put it together and win games."

Nice basket from Bam Adebayo vs. the Warriors

Curry had his 10th regular season triple-double. But a call that went Miami's way denied him a chance to tie the game with 1:39 left.

Curry was hit on the hand by Butler as he tried a 3-pointer, with the Warriors down three. A foul was called, and Butler argued. That convinced Spoelstra to challenge the call.

“Just kind of went on a leap of faith," Spoelstra said.

Butler ices the Warriors with late Midrange Jumper

It worked. The referees determined Butler hit Curry on the hand after the ball was gone; Butler said he also hit the ball first.

“They had a high-five,” referee Bill Kennedy said.

Said Curry: “You've got to be allowed to finish your motion. ... There was a lot of contact. But what do I know about calls?"

The Warriors didn't score again, and lost a game they led by 10 in the second half. Golden State’s 20 turnovers were turned into 28 Heat points — three of those turnovers being discontinued dribble calls against Jordan Poole.

‘I was shocked’: Steve Kerr reacts to NBA crackdown that hurt Jordan Poole in loss to Heat

Warriors, Jordan Poole, Steve Kerr

At least the Golden State Warriors’ biggest early-season problems weren’t the driving force behind their latest loss away from the friendly confines of Chase Center, right? The defending champs fell to the Miami Heat 116-109 at FTX Arena on Tuesday, crumbling in crunch-time of a competitive, back-and-forth affair

between two struggling teams that desperately needed a win.

Jordan Poole has a hilarious reaction to his 3rd travel of the game

WATCH: Warriors star Jordan Poole hilariously trolls ref mid-game after controversial call

Warriors, Jordan Poole

The Golden State Warriors suffered their third straight loss on Tuesday after falling to the Miami Heat, 116-109. Jordan Poole had a miserable game in this one, which also involved three controversial travelling calls on the 6-foot-4 guard.

Early in the fourth quarter, Poole got whistled for his third palming violation, and it was clear that the Warriors stud did not appreciate the call from the game official. As he was jogging back to the opposite end of the floor, Poole could not help but hilariously mock the referee

I’m not sure if the official saw Poole’s antics here because if they did then it’s possible that Poole would have been whistled for a technical foul.

Warriors head coach Steve Kerr also spoke about the rather contentious calls, saying that he was shocked by the fact that the officials seemed to have clamped down on Poole’s violations.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr said the NBA sent out an email Tuesday about that infraction. He didn't read it.

“The whole league does that," Kerr said. “They’ve been doing it ever since Allen Iverson convinced the referees that it wasn’t a carry. It is a carry. What Jordan does is a carry. But the whole league’s been doing it. I guess I have to start checking my email on game days.”

The Golden State Warriors are on a tailspin, having just lost their third game in a row in a 116-109 defeat at the hands of Jimmy Butler and the Miami Heat Tuesday night in South Beach. But if there’s anything noteworthy for the Warriors about that game, it would be the fact that Jordan Poole has just become the

youngest player ever in the history of Golden State basketball to rack up 400 career 3-pointers in the NBA.

DETROIT -- — Saddiq Bey scored 28 points, Cade Cunningham was an assist short of a triple-double and the Detroit Pistons beat the defending champion Golden State Warriors 128-114 on Sunday night to end a five-game losing streak.

“I'm overjoyed for our guys after the work they put in tonight,” Pistons coach Dwane Casey said. “That's what happens with a young, rebuilding team. Tthere are going to be nights like this where people are going to say, ‘Whoa, where did that come from?’ That's exciting."

Cunningham had 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists to help the Pistons won for the first time since their opening game. Isaiah Stewart added 24 points and 13 rebounds as Detroit's starters scored 111 points.

“I think tonight we showed what Pistons basketball is going to be,” Stewart said. “We played defense the way we needed to play it every night, and on offense we were sharing the ball and making sure everyone got shots.”

Steph makes it look easy with this Crossover Bucket

Steph Curry had 32 points and Jordan Poole added 30 for Golden State, coming off a 120-113 overtime loss in Charlotte on Saturday. The Warriors played without Klay Thompson (rest).

“We can't stop fouling, and something needs to click with our guys,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said after his team put Detroit on the line 38 times. “We have to be near the bottom of the league in defensive efficiency and that puts us in some bad spots offensively.”

Jaden Ivey Throws Down Big Flush vs. Golden State Warriors

Golden State led by 10 early in the second quarter, but the Pistons responded with a 29-9 run to take a 10-point lead of their own. Stewart had 15 points and seven rebounds in the first half, including a rare 3-pointer to put Detroit up 63-55 at halftime.

Curry was 3-8 on 3-pointers in a 15-point half, but the rest of the Warriors went 1-13 from behind the arc. Golden State had a 22-12 edge on points in the paint, but Detroit's jump shooting gave them a decided edge.

“I think our offense is killing our defense, whether it is floor balance or whether the ball doesn't move and guys are stagnant," Draymond Green said. “The two ends aren't connecting, and in order to be a great team, those two ends have to connect.”

Cade Cunningham makes a Sweet Pass Between Defenders

The Pistons kept rolling in the third quarter, starting with an 11-2 run to go up by 17, 74-57.

Poole, though, scored 12 points in 52 seconds — a three-point play and three 3-pointers — to cut it to 79-72.

WARRIORS at HORNETS | NBA FULL GAME HIGHLIGHTS | October 29, 2022

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- — The Charlotte Hornets were coming off a 20-point road loss to the Orlando Magic, playing on the second night of a back-to-back and without their starting front court of LaMelo Ball and Terry Rozier.

So they had no chance against the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors, right?

Well, think again.

This slam from Kelly Oubre Jr. was too nice

P.J. Washington erupted for 31 points, Gordon Hayward added 23 and the Hornets once again spoiled Stephen Curry’s annual homecoming game with a 120-113 overtime win over the Warriors on Saturday night.

Kelly Oubre Jr added 18 points as the Hornets beat the Warriors for the fourth straight year at the Spectrum Center, just a few miles from where Curry grew up.

“They obviously understand who is coming into the building so they don't want to give us anything easy,” Curry said. “We knew they were going to come out aggressive and with a sense of pride and they did that.”

Curry scored 31 points and had 11 rebounds to pace the Warriors, but missed a tightly contested 3-pointer at the end of regulation that would have won the game. He also air-balled a 3 in overtime and finished 3 of 13 from beyond the arc.

Jordan Poole had 24 points off the bench for Golden State.

Jalen McDaniels drills trey in OT for the Hornets

In the extra period, Jalen McDaniels knocked down a momentum-turning 3-pointer from the left wing and Dennis Smith Jr. scored on a drive to the hole to give the Hornets the lead for good at 116-111.

Curry made two free throws but Washington scored again inside, muscling a shot up and in to push the lead back to five. Washington had six points in the overtime period.

“It goes to show we have a lot of character,” Hornets coach Steve Clifford said. “We played poorly last night. ... but you could just tell in shootaround. I didn’t know we were going to win, but I knew we were going to play well. Just the way they walked into the building and the way they were talking to each other.”

Smith finished with 13 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Charlotte. He also was all over Curry on the final possession of regulation, not allowing him to get to the basket or get a decent look at a 3-pointer.

Curry lamented his decision to settle for a 3 instead of driving to the hole and looking to create.

“I can get a way better look than that,” Curry said. “I got wrapped in the trying to play hero ball in a hometown buzzer-beater type situation."

Warriors forward Draymond Green said it was frustrating to surrender a four-point lead in the final minute regulation after Washington hit a turnaround jumper and Smith scored on a driving layup to tie the game.

"We never lose those games." Green said. “I can probably recall on one hand over the last eight years that we lost a game up four with a minute to go. So that is deflating form that standpoint. We can't lose that game. That's also a team without their two starting guards."

The Warriors have not beaten the Hornets in Charlotte since Feb. 25, 2019.

“We have to get one next year," Curry said.

The Hornets had built 62-50 halftime lead behind 15 points each from Hayward and Washington and some terrific hustle from Mason Plumlee, who had nine rebounds and six assists before the break.

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Smooth as ever starting his 14th NBA season, Stephen Curry shook Tyler Herro and made it look oh so easy.

Curry scored 10 of his 33 points in a tight fourth quarter to go with nine assists and seven rebounds, leading the Golden State Warriors past the Miami Heat 123-110 on Thursday night.

He pounded his chest with both hands and hollered in delight after a dazzling sequence in which he crossed over twice to lose Herro, then stepped back and sunk a 3-pointer with 5:32 remaining that put Golden State ahead 108-100.

“It was a great move," teammate Draymond Green said. “He got to the spot that he wanted. Once he got Tyler to open his back leg up, he was kind of dead at that point. Steph is incredible and he's playing great to start this year off, which is expected. He continues to improve, which is scary that that guy continues

The Golden State Warriors weren’t forcing Tyler Herro into the action over and over during the most critical moments of Thursday’s game against the Miami Heat by accident. Stephen Curry proved as much with just over five-and-a-half minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Curry made a driving layup at 3:15, a 3 at 2:40 and long jumper at 2:04 to seal it. He has scored 30 or more points in all four home games.

Andrew Wiggins added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Warriors, and Klay Thompson had 19 points with five 3s.

Jordan Poole drove into the paint and made a pretty pass around Bam Adebayo's waist to hit Ty Jerome, who knocked down a 3-pointer with 9:36 left for a 100-92 lead then Poole's jumper at the 8:07 mark made it 102-94.

Jimmy Butler scored 27 points, Adebayo 26 and Kyle Lowry had 12 points and eight assists for Miami in the second game of a back-to-back after a 119-98 win at Portland on Wednesday.

Jordan Poole spins around his defender and finishes in style

“I thought it was our best defensive game, which isn’t saying much given the other four. It just felt like a more typical Warriors performance where we were getting stops consistently and then getting out and running,” coach Steve Kerr said. "... Other than a few careless turnovers I thought it was the best we've

played at both ends, and of course Steph was just sublime. What he's doing is incredible. He just gets by anybody. It doesn't matter who's on him, he gets right into the teeth of the defense, finishes, finds guys. He's been spectacular here to start the year."

Lowry missed a 3 from the top with 6:11 to go that would have tied it then Kevon Looney dunked moments later as the Warriors bounced back after a 134-105 thumping at Phoenix on Tuesday in which a frustrated Thompson was ejected for the first time in his career.

Two nights later, Thompson played an extended 29 minutes. Curry's Splash Brother is still working to build up to his full minutes and had been 8 of 28 from 3-point range, missing all five of his attempts against the Suns on Tuesday before a 5-for-14 outing against the Heat.

“I thought emotionally, we kept it together when it was starting to get a little squirrelly,” Suns coach Monty Williams said. “We were able to make enough plays during that time where we could get back to solid.”

Both teams lost their cool at various times during the third quarter, with all of the technical fouls called in less than six minutes. Thompson received two quick technicals and was ejected after having words with Booker, who also received a technical because of the exchange.

At one point during the argument, Thompson held up four fingers to signify the four championships the Warriors have won over the past decade. Those rings didn't help on Tuesday. The veteran guard finished with two points on 1-for-8 shooting, including 0 of 5 from 3-point range.

It was the five-time All-Star's first career ejection in 651 regular season games.

Klay Thompson got EJECTED from the Game 👀

“I love Klay Thompson, I have for a really long time," Booker said. “But that doesn't excuse us from being competitive and talking to each other. I've always admired his game, how he plays on both sides of the ball, and obviously the rings speak for themselves.

“But I'm going to bring it every time.”

Golden State's Draymond Green and coach Steve Kerr, along with Phoenix players Chris Paul and Ayton also were whistled for technicals for various outbursts in the third, with most of that ire directed at the officials.

Said Green: “I'm not one to get into what guys are taking about on the floor. There was chirping on both ends.”

Thompson didn't speak with the media following the game.

In the midst of the third-quarter chaos, the Suns were playing well and their lead which grew to 19 points by the end of the quarter. Without Thompson, the defending NBA champs were never able to mount a rally and the Suns kept a comfortable lead throughout the fourth.

Booker shot 10 of 19 from the field and 11 of 14 on free throws. The two-time All-Star added seven assists.

Steph Curry led the Warriors with 21 points. Jordan Poole scored 17 off the bench. Green added 14 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Kerr said Thompson simply got frustrated, which led to the ejection.

“His shot wasn’t going," Kerr said. "Some decent looks early didn’t go and I thought he got a little frustrated. I love the competitiveness. Obviously, he took it too far with the ejection, but I love the fire. Klay is an incredible competitor. We need his energy.”

Phoenix used a 13-0 run midway through the first to take a 37-29 lead by the end of the quarter. Paul made a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer to give the Suns a 72-66 lead at the break.

Booker scored 16 points in the first half while Ayton had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Poole led the Warriors with 14 first-half points.

The Suns improved to 3-1 for the season while the Warriors fell to 2-2.

“Once we got down, I thought we started jacking shots,” Kerr said. “We stopped moving the ball in the second half. Same thing happened against Sacramento the other night. We kind of lost our way.”

Suns backup guard Damion Lee played the Warriors for the first time since he signed with Phoenix during the offseason.

Lee played the previous four seasons with the Warriors, helping them win the title last season. He's already made a mark with his new team, sinking the game-winning jumper in the season opener against the Mavericks.

Lee finished with five points in 15 minutes on Tuesday.

Steph Curry buries 7 treys in Warriors win

Steph Curry hits seven 3s, six in the first half, as the Warriors survive a late Kings surge to win 130-125.

SAN FRANCISCO -- — The Golden State Warriors are playing dominant basketball for stretches, then struggling to defend during others.

Stephen Curry scored 28 of his 33 points during an 89-point first half, and the defending champions beat former top assistant Mike Brown and his Sacramento Kings 130-125 on Sunday night.

Curry, who recorded his third straight 30-point performance to start the season, scored 21 points in the second quarter with five 3-pointers and shot 11 for 22 overall, including 7 of 12 on 3s. The reigning NBA Finals MVP helped Golden State to its third-most points in any half in franchise history and second-most in a

first half. The Warriors' 50 points in the second quarter were a franchise record and matched the third-most points in any period.

“It was fun, 89 points in the first half, that's crazy,” Jordan Poole said.

Curry has three straight 30-point games to start a season for the second time in his career, also done in 2018-19.

Sacramento cut a 26-point deficit down to four on Chimezie Metu’s dunk with 1:04 left before Golden State held on.

“We played at times brilliantly and we couldn’t sustain it,” coach Steve Kerr said. “It was closer than it should have been, but I give Sacramento a lot of credit. Mike's doing a great job with those guys. They're fighting, they're competing. They've had three close losses now to start the year. ... We let our guard down

and they took advantage of it.”

Andrew Wiggins added 24 points with a driving slam to beat the final buzzer and Poole also scored 24 as the Warriors shot 51.7%. Klay Thompson was held to eight points on 3-for-10 shooting.

De’Aaron Fox scored 26 after two 30-point games and Domantas Sabonis contributed 19 points and 14 rebounds, but didn't play in the fourth for winless Sacramento (0-3) in the second night of a back-to-back. The Kings, who lost 111-109 at home to the Clippers on Saturday night, attempted 100 shots Sunday and

their three defeats have been decided by 14 total points.

Kevin Huerter gets the Hoop and the Harm

“We can’t give up 50 points in the second quarter, or no quarters," guard Malik Monk said. "It’s hard to win an NBA game like that.”

Brown, in his first year as Kings coach, received his championship ring from Kerr in a pregame ceremony on the court along with Sacramento assistant Leandro Barbosa, who also was part of the Warriors' fourth title in eight years.

Brown came down the hallway from the visiting locker room and snuck up on Kerr, then they chuckled and hugged.

The 52-year-old Brown filled in for Kerr for three playoff games last spring when Golden State's coach had COVID-19. Brown also went 11-0 guiding the Warriors through postseason games during the team’s 2017 title run while Kerr was out dealing with debilitating symptoms stemming from complications of back

surgery. Kerr returned for Game 2 of the NBA Finals that year.

“Mike is brilliant. He’s just got so much energy, so much love for the game, love for his job, for his work,” Kerr said. “He brings his enthusiasm every single day and that’s what we enjoyed so much over the last five, six years, however long he was here, and he and I were really a perfect pair. He sort of covered up for

my weaknesses and complemented me really well. I just loved being around him. Thrilled for him. It’s a great opportunity.”

NUGGETS at WARRIORS | NBA FULL GAME HIGHLIGHTS | October 21, 2022

SAN FRANCISCO -- — Nuggets coach Michael Malone so appreciates Nikola Jokic taking over a game and leading the way on both ends.

Jokic had his 77th career triple-double with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists playing with a sore right wrist he had taped, and Denver edged Golden State 128-123 on Friday night in a rematch of the teams' first-round playoff series won by the Warriors in five games on their way to the title.

“My biggest challenge for Nikola is always finding a way to use his voice and be a leader," Malone said. "This is his team. He’s a great player, and what makes him great is he makes every one of those guys better. And that chemistry is only going to continue to get better and better as the season goes along. But

tonight was a great example of what it has potential to be.”

Jordan Poole made a backcourt steal from Bones Hyland and scored with 14.7 seconds left to get Golden State to 124-123 then Bruce Brown dunked immediately off a long pass by Jokic. The Warriors had another chance and Klay Thompson missed a potential tying 3 from the top with 9.3 seconds to go.

Jokic secured the rebound then converted two free throws.

“He’s everybody’s kryptonite,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “He’s a two-time MVP for a reason.”

Stephen Curry scored 34 points with five 3-pointers after a second straight slow start shooting and has 30-point performances in his first two games. But the Warriors committed 19 turnovers that led to 30 Denver points.

SAN FRANCISCO -- — After all those thrilling NBA Finals battles of last decade, Stephen Curry and LeBron James can still put on a spectacular show well into their 30s.

Opening night between these two greats showed why Curry's team is on top these days.

Curry began the season with 33 points, seven assists and six rebounds despite a slow start, and the Golden State Warriors beat James and the Los Angeles Lakers 123-109 on Tuesday night after receiving their championship rings in a pregame ceremony.

“I’m thrilled with the win,” coach Steve Kerr said. “Ring night is never an easy game and the first game of the season is usually filled with some nerves early on.”

Jordan Poole made a pretty bounce pass to a driving Draymond Green for a layup and all seemed perfectly well with the defending champions almost two weeks after Green punched Poole at practice Oct. 5, then took a brief leave of absence from the team to work on his emotions. Poole wound up with 12 points and

seven assists.

“We went out there, we had a job to do tonight to win a game,” Poole said when asked if healing has happened between him and Green. “It was a ring night and that's really what we were focused on finishing the first game. It was a huge win against a really good team.”

James had 31 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists, while Russell Westbrook scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds after nursing a sore left hamstring. Anthony Davis added 27 points, but the Lakers couldn't keep up in another signature, runaway third quarter by reigning NBA Finals MVP Curry and Co.

“That third quarter is where they always excelled, when they made this transition to being a powerhouse team,” James said. “You’ve always got to be ready for the third quarters, and we were not tonight.”

Curry missed his initial five 3-pointers and finished 10 for 22, 4 of 13 from deep.

“It’s really fun to be a part of, it’s really fun to watch,” Poole said. “... These guys have played at the highest level over and over and over again.”

Kerr limited the minutes of both Thompson and Green, who was away from the team until last Thursday. Kerr said he will increase Thompson's minutes each game as a precaution following his return in January from an absence of more than 2 1/2 years for surgeries to his left knee and right Achilles tendon.

Warriors center James Wiseman made his first appearance since his rookie season of 2019-20 after sitting out all of last season recovering from right knee surgery. He had eight points and seven rebounds.

The Lakers' 22 turnovers led to 27 points for the Warriors.

It was business as usual for Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, as they opened their season with a casual walloping of the Los Angeles Lakers at home Tuesday night. The Warriors scored a 123-109 victory over LeBron James and company, and they did that in style from start to finish. Speaking of which,

here is Curry just toying with Anthony Davis’ defense in the fourth quarter.

Steve Kerr challenged Wiggins to keep up the rebounding that helped define his sensational NBA Finals performance.

The box score totals may be more “good” than “great” in the rebounding department, but when you account for the amount of balls he kept alive, I’d say it was a very successful day there for him.

That's just beautiful basketball.
